Services were conducted by Rev. Stanley White. The casket was covered with a pall of beautiful flowers, and the numerous floral designs at the grave were evidence of the great esteem in which she was held. Interment was in Cedarwood Cemetery at Roanoke Rapids. Mrs. Hayes death came as a great shock to her relatives and friends, although she had been in declining health for several months. She was always bright and cheerful until the last. She was the widow of the George L. Hayes, who died 15 years ago, and the daughter of the late William R. and Charlena H. Hart, former residents of Southampton County. Mrs. Hayes was a native of Boykins, moving to Roanoke Rapids in 1895. Her parents constructed the first residence in the Rosemary section of the town, which was a pine woods at the time. Mrs. Hayes was assistant secretary-treasurer of the Rosemary Federal Savings and Loan Association until her retirement in 1954, due to ill health. Surviving her are her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George L. Hayes, Jr., and three grandson, Lewis, Bobby and Franky, of Roanoke Rapids; two sisters, Mrs. H.J. Smith of Statesville, N.C., and Mrs. Alexander Dunlap of Atlanta, Ga.; an aunt, Mrs. Mae H. Grizzard of Roanoke Rapids; and two first cousins, Miss Lona A. Ellis and ----- whose home she was a frequent visitors.
