He was born in Halifax County, North Carolina in September 1843. He married Annie Elizabeth Benton June 15, 1871 in Halifax County. To this union 15 children were born, 9 of whom lived to be grown and married. Frederick Nathaniel served the South during the War Between the States. Because of his age and untrained in the use of implements of war and military tactics, he was ready and willing to do his part for his country. He served as a guard for 2 years, with John Allen and Bill Sanders near Louisberg. Frederick Porter lived and made his place in the world by honest dealings and faithful service. He owned and operated a large farm near Hollister. He was stricken with Typhoid Fever and the disease left him physically unable to do the work required on the farm, so he moved to Hollister where he made his home until his death. He was a member of the Methodist Protestant Church. During his early life, he belonged to Edon M.P.C., near Enfield. In his later life, he belonged to the church in Hollister, where he “was a liberal contributor and active in the erection of the present Methodist Episcopal Church, where he labored faithfully until he was called to his reward.” Surviving is his widow, Mrs. Annie E. Porter, his faithful and devoted companion for nearly 57 years. Survivors also include the following relatives: Mrs. J.R. Powers and Mrs. W. F. White of Enfield; Exum, Ivey, Laddy and Miss Annie May Porter of Hollister; Mrs. J.W. Warren and Curtis Porter of Vaughan; 27 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, besides a large number of friends. He died December 5, 1927 in Hollister. “The funeral services were conducted by his pastor, the Rev. C.L. Spencer of Enfield, Rev. J. Clyde Auman, pastor of the M.P. Church of Enfield, and Rev. M. Ivey Crutchfield, pastor of the M.P. Church of Littleton. The remains were laid to rest and await the morn of the resurrection in the cemetery at Enfield. Ready and willing he slipped away as the day into night, laying down the toils of this world and answering the call of his Master. Truly a good man has gone from among us. A place has been made vacant here, but one has been filled in the mansion above. In His wisdom God calls his servants from this into a fuller and more noble service, thus our brother was called, Hearts are sad and eyes are filled with tears when we think of his going to a better land, but we should rejoice and strive to follow him, in his foot steps and be willing to say with Wesley, Servant of God, well done! Thy glorious warfare’s past; The battle’s fought, the race is won, And thou are crowned at last.” Additional Comments: His stone in Enfield cemetery gives birth as July 10, 1835 and death as December 4, 1927 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/halifax/obits/p/porter2679gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ncfiles/ File size: 3.4 Kb
