HOME BETTY JEAN HANCOCK SANDERSON ROANOKE RAPIDS – Betty Jean Hancock Sanderson, 81, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids. Mrs. Sanderson was born in Halifax County, the daughter of the late Elmer Thomas Hancock and Annie Belle Hargrave Hancock. She was a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School and the widow of William F. “Sandy” Sanderson, USAF Sergeant retired. In addition to Roanoke Rapids, she lived in Colonial Heights, Va., Cape Cod, Mass, and Brunswick, Maine. She retired from Walser Motors and was a member of Quankie Baptist. She will be remembered for her quick smile and hearty laugh. She was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Harrell; two brothers, Calvin and Roland Hancock; and four brothers-in-law, Jerry Brown, Alan Welch, Peter Kasper, and Dan Lanier. She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine “Lori” Nelms and her husband, Michael, of Roanoke Rapids; five sisters, Margaret Brown of Smithfield, Hazel Welch of Roanoke Rapids, Thelma Kasper of Clemmons, Alma Lanier of Roanoke Rapids and JoAnne Smith and her husband, Pender, of Emporia, Va. Among her nieces and nephews are three living in Roanoke Rapids, Dennis Jackson and his wife, Linda, Robert Lanier and Nancy Crowe. Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, July 3 in the chapel of Wrenn, Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service, 1015 W. 5th St. in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements. Interments will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.
