James N. Turner, with a squad of Company B (Iredell county), Second North Carolina Calvary, captured the drum major and associates of the Second Maryland Regiment, who had stopped to dine with a friend (?) near Pollocksville, NC. My recollection is that Lieut. Turner sent the staff home as a trophy. He was afterwards promoted to the captaincy of Company D (Cumberland and Harnett counties), and was killed in the fall of 1864. His home was in Harnett county and he was engaged in the survey for the Western North Carolina Railroad at the time of his enlistment. Any information concerning the staff will be thankfully received by B.L. Bingham, corner Water and South streets, Baltimore, or the undersigned. The gavel of the Masonic lodge near Pollocksville, NC, of 1862, can be restored if desired. Col. Taylor, Second Maryland Regiment, Baltimore, Md. has it. W.A.
