Jack Dempsey was born on Cove Creek and he moved away from North Carolina after he lived here several years, going to Colorado with his parents. There are two aunts of the famous boxer living in Waynesville today, Miss Ella Dempsey and Mrs. James Brook. James Evans, who lives in Cove Creek, near the place where Jack was born, states that he played with the little fellow and used to dance him on his knee. Residents of the section in which Dempsey first lived, state that he is to be remembered as an unusual fighter even in his very young days. It is said that the children of the neighborhood, although much older and larger than little Jack, were afraid of him, and that the champion held sway in fighting circles.
