Sorrells and Jane Morrow Sorrells. Elijah married there 2 February 1850 to Millie L. Smathers. Elijah died sometime after 1902, when he aqppeared on a list of eligible voters, and before the 1910 Census. He is buried at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesville.] Haywood County Superior Court December 1850 State vs Elijah Sorrells, Case no. 11, Defendant pleads 'Not Guilty'; Jurors were sworn & empowered, who find the defendant guilty in manner & form as charged in the Bill of Indictment. Judgment prayed; fined Six Cents and in custody until fine & costs are paid. Thursday, 17 December 1851 State vs. Elijah Sorrells. It appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that a "Fi fa" in this case was duly issued from the last term of this court, returnable to the present term and that it was delivered to the John P. Allison, Sheriff of Haywood County, more than twenty days before this court and that no due __?__ is made thereon. It is therefore considered by this court that the State of North Carolina have and recover of the said John P. Allison one hundred dollars for his default, according to statute." Particulars of the case are not mentioned. Allison had likely posted bond for Elijah, who did not appear. December Session, 1855 Elijah Sorrells is charged for his reputed involvement in an altercation or "Affray", which could be anything similar to fighting, disturbing the peace, or such. "Case #18, State vs Elijah Sorrells. Defendant pleads guilty. Judgment of the court that the defendant pay a fine of one dollar and all costs to be levied by the clerk and in custody of the sheriff until fine and costs is paid. Henry Smathers [probably the complainant] confesses judgment with defendant for fine and costs. Tuesday, March 24th 1857 State vs. Robert Hill and Elijah Sorrells. Defendants plead not guilty. The jury finds both guilty as charged in the bill of [unspecified] indictment. Judgment of the court that each of the parties pay a fine of $5, and ordered into custody of the sheriff. Bryant Hill comes into court and confessed judgment to the State with Robert Hill for fine and costs. John L.
