Jones, Jr. was about 17 years old he enlisted on May 4, 1861 as a private during the Civil War, fighting with Company L, 16th North Carolina Infantry Regiment of Thomas' Legion in the Confederate Army. In October of the following year he was reassigned to Company E of the 69th NC Regiment. In a unit reorganization near War's end, Zack was reassigned to Company E, Love's Regiment of Thomas' Legion No other records exist on his Civil War service, save for some not-so-favorable remarks in his Haywood County court and estate proceedings, 1876-1892. Private Zachariah P. Jones, Confederate States Army, Thomas’ Legion, Co. B & E, Infantry Regiment, Haywood County, Compiled Service Records. [The Legion also contained a sizable number of Cherokee Indians from the nearby reservation.] May 4 1861, Enlisted at Waynesville, N.C., by Col. R.G.A. Love, for a period of one year. September thru October 1862, Co. B [reorganized as Company C, November 1862). Absent without leave. November thru December 1862, present for duty. January thru February 1863, absent from Company, detailed for duty with Lt. Moody. Last paid October 31 1862. March thru April 1863, present for duty. Last paid by an officer Deadrick, March 1 1863. May 31 1863, received payment of $35.00. May thru June 1863, absent on detail as a teamster for the Post Commissary at Strawberry Plains, Tennessee. Last paid April 30 1863 by Deadrick or officer J.W. Terrell; both are noted in the records for the same pay date. September thru October 1863, absent on detached service. November thru December 1863, absent on detached service, detailed to Quartermaster Department, Bristol, Tennessee. Has not been paid since April 30. February 4 1864, placed his mark "x" on a pay voucher for $22.00, pay for period November 1 1863 thru January 1 1864, at Bristol, Tennessee, by Captain R.H. Hill. January thru February 1864, attached to Quartermaster Department at Bristol. [Spending too much time in Bristol, and not enough with the troops in the field, would result in Zack contracting syphilis, from which he died after the war. Having also inflicted his wife after returning home, she, too, would die from the disease.] May 31 1864, he places his mark "x" on a voucher, "For services as Extra duty man, teamsters from January 1st to May 20 1864, being (140) one hundred & forty days @ 25 cents per day, $35.00, Bristol, Tennessee. September 2 1864, Co. E., received payment of $44.00, for four months pay. September 22 & 28 1864, Co. E, placed his mark "x" on a clothing requisition.
