Styles, From National Archives Records Joseph William Sorrells served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War with the 25th North Carolina Regiment. He enlisted in Haywood County on 22 March 1862, Company C, 25th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. On May 5, 1864 he deserted, and on 31 December 1864 took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States Government. The full record from his Confederate service file, National Archives: March 22 1862, enlisted at Waynesville, N.C. by Samuel C. Bryson, for a period of three years. March thru April 1862, present for duty. July thru August 1862, absent from his unit, detached service as a train guard. Last paid June 30 1862. September thru October 1862, present for duty. Not paid since June. November 4 1862, admitted to Confederate Hospital at Culpepper, Virginia. December 2 1862, C.S.A. General Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia, diagnosis pneumonia; furloughed December 19 1862. December 19 1862, paid $44 for service from July 1 1862 to October 31 1862, by G.D. Spurrier. November thru December 1862, absent sick. Last paid August 31 1862 by a Captain Miller. January thru February 1863, absent sick. No pay since August 1862. March thru April 1863, absent sick. Last paid February 28 1863 by Captain Miller. May thru June 1863, absent sick, on furlough. No pay since February 1863. July thru August 1863, present on sick call. Last paid June 30 1863 by Captain Miller. September thru October 1863, present for duty. Last paid August 31 1863 by a Captain Farrell. November thru December 1863, present for duty. Last paid October 31 1863 by Captain Miller. Remarks: DESERTED May 5 1864, released. [Footnote ­ Joseph’s physical description leads me to believe that there was Native American blood in the family. His sister Rebecca Sorrells married John Henry Dyer in Haywood County. Dyer claimed Cherokee descent but it cannot be proven.
