War Pension File of JOHN MASSEY #W 4724 State of North Carolina Superior Court of Law Haywood Co NC October Term 1832 On this 5th day of October 1832 personally appeared in open court, being a Court of record, John Massey aged 74 Years in the month of July last, who being first duly sworn according to las doth make on his oath this following Declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the Acts of Congress of the 18th of March 1818 and 1st of May 1820. That he, the said John Massey enlisted as a private soldier in the Revolutionary war in the Continental Establishment in the month of February 1777 for the term of two years and a half in the Company commanded by Captain James Turner in the 3rd North Carolina Regiment. That he marched to Wilmington, North Carolina in the month of June of the same year as well as recollected, from there he marched to Charleston South Carolina in the month of July under the command of GeneralJohn Sumner from there he marched to Savannah Georgia where he remained until February 1778 when he was discharged from the North Carolina troops and attached to what was called an independent regiment commanded by Col. McIntosh in the company commanded by Capt. Levoe under whom he march to the back settlements of Georgia. He remained out until late in the fall when he returned to Savannah and was in the Battle at that place in December 1778 after which he rejoined the North Carolina troops under the Command of Col Little and was in the Battle at Brier Creek on the 4th of April 1779 when he received a wound in the left arm which rendered him unfit for duty and he was discharged . That he hereby relinquishes any claim whatever to a pension except the present which he thinks ought to commence with his first application which was made October 1831 and that the following the reasons for not making earlier applications. That while he was able to labor and maintain this family he was unwilling to apply, but having become poor, helpless, and very needy, he, 12 months ago felt himself bound to apply. And in (?????) of the act of the 12th of May 1820 I do Solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time, by gift , sale or otherwise disposed of my property, or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provision of and Act of Congress entitled and Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land and Naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary war passed on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not , nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities, contracts or debts due me, nor having any income other than what is contained in the schedules hereto annexed and by me subscribed sworn to and subscribed in open court, being a court of word this 5th day of October 1832. Love (clerk) John (X) Massey Schedule One track of one hundred and thirty seven acres of land of a common quality. .Much worn and out of repair and not worth more than ten dollars per annum, much in the mountains, one cow and two yearlings worth sixteen dollars. One bed and furniture and other household furnishings perhaps worth (exclusive of the bed and furniture) six dollars. 8 head of hogs worth eight dollars amounting in all to forty dollars. He has no family but himself and his wife, and old woman and very infirm and he himself unable to labor from old age. No changes have taken place in his property since the 18th of March 1818 with a view of re ing it to bring him within the provision of the said act. Sworn to in open court 5th Oct 1832 J.B. Love (clerk) John (X) Massey Certificate of Pension for John Massey, pvt. NC approved 7 January 1834 at a rate of $80.00 per annum. Arrears to 4 Sept 1833 :$200 plus semi annual allowance ending 1 Mar 1834 : $40. Total claim- $240. Recorded in book E. Vol. 6 ½ pg.65 WIDOW'S PENSION APPLICATION OF LYDIA MASSEY: State of North Carolina Haywood County On this the 19th day of April 1843 personally appeared before me William Moore one of the acting Magistrates and a member of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions in and for the aforsaid county and state.(It being a court of Record) Liddy Massey a resident Of the aforesaid county and state aged (81) Eighty one years who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July4th 1836 That she is the widow of the late John Massey decs. who was a private soldier in the No. Carolina Militia in the War of the Revolution that lived in Haywood County NC. and drew a pension under the act 1 1832 from the United States of $80. Eighty Dollars per annum on the account of his Revolutionary services - that the said John Massey was places on the Pension roll sometime in the winter of 1834. She further declares that she was married to the said John Massey June 11th (1779).Seventeen seventy-nine.---that her husband the aforsaid JohnMassey died on the 12th May Eighteen hundred and thirty-five (1835) and that she has remained a widow ever since that period as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereto anneshed???. Sworn to and subscribed on this the 19th day of April (1843) Eighteen hundred and forty three before me William Moore Liddy (X) Massey I the said Justice do hereby certify that . State of North Carolina Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions Haywood Co NC September term 1843 On this 18th day of September 1843 before the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions at Wainsville in and for the County of Haywood & state aforesaid personally appeared Lebor Massey son of John Massey late Revolutionary pension dec. of the County & State aforesaid who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following statements in relation to the foregoing Family record of John Massey the aforesaid his Father, which record is attached to this above and the affiances has exhibited it to the Court with the following statements Viz. That the forgoing is a true and perfect copy of his fathers old original Family record which shows his marriage with his wife Lydia Sandlin in the year of one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine. thus in the affiant coppied it himself some seven years age at a time when the original was to be taken off to South Carolina by a member of the Family which was the last thus he the affaint has ever known of said record. Thus he believes the facts set forth in said record to be just and true with the exception of the County ,thus the parties aforesaid John Massey & Lydia Sandlin formerly Bute as stated but at the time of their marriage it was Granville Co he thinks---And this affiant further states that the Record on the opposite side sharing the same record birth, is a record of his own family. Governor NC and to his successors in the sum of five hundred pounds lawful money which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves & each of our heirs & jointly & servally firmly, by these presents sealed with our seals and dated this 7 day of June anno Domi 1779. The c ---rtain of the above obligation is such that whereas the avove bound John Massey hath the day of the date hereof obtained of License to celebrate the rites of Matrimony between him the said John Massey and Lydda Sandland,ow if no lawful cause shall hereafter appear to obstruct the said marriage then the avove obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force and power. Wiggins, Clerk of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Session for the county and state aforesaid, hereby certify that the foregoing is a full, true and perfect copy of the marriage bond of John Massey bearing date the 7 June one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine. in plain and legible figures as appears in the record in my office. Certificate of Pension issued 6 June 1844 to Lydia Massey, widow of John Massey, pvt. NC Line, for $80.00 per annum. Recorded in Book A, Vol. 1 pg. 203.
