JAMES EDWARD NANNEY
CRABTREE – James Edward Nanney, 80, died Friday, June 14, 2002 at 
Asheville VA Medical Hospital. A native of Mitchell County, he was a 
son of the late Matt and Mae Nanney. He was a WWII Army Veteran and a 
Purple Heart recipient. He was also preceded in death by two infant 
sons, Paul and Terry Nanney; a sister and two brothers. Survivors are 
his wife of 63 years, Marie Davis Nanney; ten children, Ray Nanney of 
Troy, Ralph Nanney of Hickory, Opal Ballew, Darrell Nanney and Terrell 
Nanney, all of Burnsville, Harold Nanney, Ferrell Nanney, Dana Miller 
and Marolynn Nanney all of Spruce Pine; four sisters, Louise Cox, Juanita 
Buchanan and Linda Nanney all of Spruce Pine and Willie Fisher of Marion; 
a brother, Charles Nanney of Spruce Pine; eighteen grandchildren and 
eighteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. 
Sunday in the Estatoe Church of God, of which he is a member. Revs. 
Phillip Garland and Scott Jenkins will officiate. Burial will be in the 
Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with military grave rites conducted 
by Sgt. E.L. Randolph, Chapter 57 DAV. The family will recieve friends 
from 6-8 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home 
where the body will remain until taken to the church to lie in state 30 
minutes prior to the service.
