HAYWOOD COUNTY, NC - OBITUARIES - Mary M. Phipps, 9 Mar 2005 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Mrs. Mary M. Phipps, 95, Phipps Lane, Watauga, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at Hillview Health Center following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Phipps was a native of Waynesville, N.C., and the daughter of the late Harry L. and Mary Campbell Moody. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen B. Phipps, April 8, 1978, her stepmother, Lizzie Murry Moody, and by two brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Phipps received her degree in education from East Tennessee State University and was a teacher and principal at Watauga, Range and Central Elementary and also taught at Elizabethton High School. Mrs. Phipps had served as a City Commissioner and Mayor of Watauga for several years and as a Board Member of the Watauga Fire Department. She was a member of the Eastern Star and a member of Brick Christian Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Patsy Phipps, Elizabethton; a brother, John C. Moody, Skyland, N.C.; a sister, Kathleen Young, Skyland, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Patrick Allen Phipps, Elizabethton, and Alana Jay Davis, Louisville, Ky. Five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Phipps will be conducted at 2: p.m. Saturday, March 12, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Mr. Paul Peer, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Trilla Little, organist. Interment will follow the funeral service at Monte Vista Burial Park, Johnson City. Active pallbearers will be Brownie Lee Phipps, Patrick Phipps, Jakie Starnes, Ken Potter, Kenneth Ray, John Southern, Perry Perkins and Jimmy Stevens. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Lane, Ralph Cole, Truman Clark, Dr. Frank Anderson, H.E. West Jr., Harry Moody III and members of the Watauga Fire Department. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 until 2 p.m. Saturday.
