HAYWOOD COUNTY, NC - WILLS AND ESTATES - Lewis Sorrells, 5 Oct 1839 ----¤¤¤¤---- Lewis Sorrells, son of Joseph and Millie Sorrells, died intestate, upon which his estate was ordered to be inventoried and offered at public sale. This is from Haywood County estate records. "Haywood County Superior Court, 5 October 1839, Ordered by court that Constable Samuel Fitzgerald be appointed administrator of the estate of Lewis Sorrells, deceased, it appearing to the satisfaction of said court that Fitzgerald filed his bond in the sum of three hundred dollars & gave for security William Allman and then was qualified as such." The estate sale brought $106.06. That record , "North Carolina, Haywood County. Duplicate of the property sold on the 2nd day of November 1839 by Samuel Fitzgerald, administrator of the Estate of Lewis Sorrells, Names and Articles [selected items] Widow Sorrells 1 inch auger $0.12, 3/4 inch auger $0.10, William Francis 1/2 inch auger $0.16; A. Ratcliff 1 axe $0.75; Widow Sorrells sheep $12.00; P. Edwards 2 calves $6.00; W.F. Brown 1 saw & 6 pegs $6.12; R.H. Cleveland 4 two year old hogs $13.50; Bannister Turner 40 bushels corn @ $0.36, 40 bushels corn at $0.36-1/2, 20 bushels corn at $0.37-1/2, total $36.65; John Morrow shucks $0.12; Widow Sorrells Sunday book $0.50. Total $92.60. January the 15th 1840, second sale: Joseph Sorrells [his son] one cow $10.60; Bannister Turner 1 sheep skein $2.59-1/2; Thomas Rhinehart 1 saddle $1.27. Total $106.06-3/4. The foregoing is a true list of all the property that I have sold as stated & that has come to my hands except the widows dower. S. Fitzgerald, Administrator." "The following is all debts that have come to my hands as stated below of Lewis Sorrells, deceased: Account of William Allen $10.33, 1 Sheriffs receipt A. Henry $15.92, Elihu Chambers $1.38 dismissed at my cost, 1 note on Joseph Chambers due the 1st January 1838 insolvent $45.00, 1 note Andrew Bryson due the 25th December 1834 $5.25, 1 account Sitton's Estate $90.25, 1 account Albert Ratcliff $17.19. This is all to my knowledge, certified by me, S. Fitzgerald, Administrator." [Elihu Chambers was the father of Catherine Chambers, second wife of John Henry Dyer. Elihu lived up into his 90's] We the undersigned committee appointed by Court to Settle with S. Fitzgerald, administrator of the Estate of Lewis Sorrells, deceased, find from the inventory & papers submitted to our estimation that the amount sold was $228.69, including administrators commission $11.50. Record of administrator $230.44-3/4. Balance due $1.75-3/4. The following debts Returned as desperate. One Judgment on Alexander Henry $15.92, One Judgment on Joseph Chambers $45.00, Debt against Elihu Chambers $1.38. Total $62.30. We find remaining in the hands of administrator $1.75-3/4 cents together with the above debts returned desperate. January 27th 1841. Signed W. Brown, S.W. Gaston, E.B. Herrin.
