Hertford County, NC - Solon Borland's Children ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Solon Borland & FAMILY" Chapter 3: "Solon's Children" THOMAS BORLAND (11/09/08), (01-15-13) Solon BORLAND (1811VA-1864TX) may have had seven children? Thomas & Harold ("Little Solon") with first wife Huldah, possibly (?) one with second wife Elizabeth, rumored to have had one (?) by creole lady friend, George Godwin, Fanny Green & Mary Melbourne with third and last wife Mary. We find documentation that the five known children, Thomas, Harold ("Little Solon"), George Godwin, Fanny ("Fannie") Green, twice married Mary ("Mollie") Melbourne plus Solon's two granddaughters Grace ("Darce") Melbourne and twice married Mary Borland BEATTIE, lived lives any parent should be most proud about. We were unable to trace his four grandsons, Russell & Charles BORLAND (Veterans of World War I), Godwin Borland MOORES, or George Melbourne BEATTIE (with Oliver Typrwriter Co in NY, 1903), --- hopefully they too lead good lives. Material used herein from The College of William & Mary archives is noted with (WM). 3C. GEORGE GODWIN BORLAND (1846AR-1862TX): ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ His ancestry. GEORGE GODWIN BORLAND was born in Little Rock Wednesday, 11 March 1846 prior to the Mexican-American War, while his father was Adjutant General of Arkansas. He was first known child of Solon BORLAND's (1811VA-1864TX) third marriage with Mary Isabel MELBOURNE (1824LA-1862AR), named for Solon's uncle, George GODWIN (1787VA-1866VA), of Nansemond county, Virginia who with wife Fanny GREEN, born 1785, raised and educated Solon for a period of time around 1820 (see 1820 census & 1821 school receipt) and George's half-brother Thomas (1833NC-1859AR) from 1837 to 1849. George, single, died 24 June 1862 in Clarksville, Red River county, Texas. Burial location is documented as Mount Holly cemetery, Little Rock, Pulaski county, Arkansas, wthout marker, where since May Day 1992 is memoral cenotaph placed to honor his father (with incorrect birth date) by the Arkansas Bar Foundation and Pulaski Bar Association. George was in the 1850 Hot Springs and 1860 Princeton Federal census with mother and sister Fanny. He's thought to have attended Saint Johns' College's preparatory school under Colonel John Baker THOMPSON along with ENGLISH, Peyton Danley (1846AL-1921AR), HEMPSTEAD, Fay (1847AR-1934AR), then, at age 15, served as private in Woodruff's Artillery, 23 April 1861, under his father, when Solon raided href=http://www.encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryID=788>Fort Smith as aide-de-camp to Governor Henry M RECTOR. At age 16, with mother's reluctant consent, served Confederate States Army in Indian Country under General Albert PIKE, so says obituary, but due to poor health, was discharged, dying Tuesday, 24 June 1862 in Clarksville at a friend's home while on his way to Little Rock, so written in his obituary, http://files.usgwarchives.net/ar/pulaski/obits/borlandgg.txt NOTE: A newspaper article was received 04/18/2012 from Little Rock, Arkansas concerning results of volunteer Kay TATUM's recent research. She discovered that Colonel Solon BORLAND's third son, Private George Godwin BORLAND (1846AR-1862TX) (namesake, father's uncle), a Civil War veteran, is buried in Mount Holly without a marker. The Gen T J CHURCHILL (he served as prisoner with Solon BORLAND during Mexican War) chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy (whose 1919 Historical Arkansas publication, page #20 has poetic sister's poem, David O Dodd, encouraged to be written by General Albert PIKE (page #6) in 1869) It is their intention to honor this young veteran with their marker on 150th anniversary of his death, June 24. True, he was buried with mother and oldest half-brother, with other half brother, Major Harold BORLAND buried at Little Rock National Cemetery, having a government marker with incorrect rank. All three at Mount Holly cemetery are within BORLAND plot, without markers,~ ~ where on Law Day 1992 the Arkansas Bar Foundation and Pulaski County Bar Association installed a Cenotaph honoring George's father, providing incorrect birth date. http://files.usgwarchives..net/nc/hertford/bios/borland17.txt ______________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
