Hertford County, NC - Spiers/Gatling Cemeteries ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These Cemeteries are on the old James Gatling Plantation (Grandfather of Richard Gatling) Take US 258 North of out of Murfreesboro, North Carolina Go about 3 or 4 miles and turn left on Gatling Road. Go about 3/4 of a mile and this cemetery is in a field on the left hand side of the road. The first cemetery (Spiers cemetery) is about 1/10 off the road on the left side of the path. Keep following the path and you will find two other cemeteries. I have the names listed below. This path will bring you back on highway 258. Spiers Cemetery-Como North Carolina This headstone is large and tall On the North side of headstone: Brackney Thomas Spiers Wife Margaret Rea Daughters Annie & Rosa Peate Grandson Atwood Spiers NOTE: Also buried in this cemetery is Capt. Day Ridley, a Rev. War officer but there is no headstone for him. On the South side of headstone: Other children Lucy S Bryant Margaret S. Hill Trrone Spiers William Spiers Douglas Spiers McDonald Spiers Second graveyard on the James Gatling plantation: Pvt. Roscious B. Gatling Co. C 17 NC infantry CSA June 9, 1841 July 17, 1909 Martha Pope Gatling Sept. 5, 1864 Feb. 1, 1930 Rosa Lee Bryant April 7, 1865 Dec. 7, 1867 Blunna M. Gatling Feb. 13, 1873 July 11, 2873 This is a double headstone Jethro G. Gatling Eunice B. Gatling Oct. 11, 1888 Sept. 7, 1870 July 17, 1909 Nov. 18, 1891 Note: James Gatling (Grandfather of Richard Gatling) is buried here but there is no headstone for him. There are 10 or 12 more graves here with no headstones. I can see indentions in the ground. Third graveyard on James Gatling Plantation: Bryant Cemetery George W. Ary W.
