Hertford County, NC - 1850 U.S. Federal Census - Northern District For the first time enumerators of the 1850 census were instructed to record the names of every person in the household. Added to this, enumerators were presented with printed instructions, which account for the greater degree of accuracy compared with earlier censuses. Enumerators were asked to include the following categories in the census: name; age as of the census day; sex; color; birthplace; occupation; value of real estate; whether married within the previous year; whether deaf, dumb, blind, or insane; whether a pauper; whether able to read or speak English; and whether the person attended school within the previous year. No relationships were shown between members of a household. Key to the following 1850 census list: A. Family Number 1. Names in household 2. Age as of June 1, 1850 3. Sex 4. Color 5. Occupation 6. Value of real estate 7. Birthplace 8. Whether married within the previous year 9. Attended School Within the year. 10. Persons over 20 yr’s of age who cannot read or write. 11. Whether Deaf & Dumb, Blind, Insane, Idiotic, Pauper or Convict. Each household is numbered by the order of visitation, and the households are separated by a triple space. If an individual has information relating to the last four columns of the original census it will be noted. A person of color will be noted B=Black or M=Mulatto. If an individual is born somewhere other than Hertford Co., North Carolina it will be noted. If the individual was married within the year it will be noted as "Newly Wed". If a person cannot read or write, it will be noted as "NRW". If an individual attended school within the year, it will be noted as “School”. If the transcriber is unable to read some of the enumerators handwriting there will be a “?” designating the word or name in question. When possible please check out the actual photo copied census to verify accuracy and for additional information. 1850 United States Federal Census Seventh Census of the United States Schedule No. 1. - Free Inhabitants of the Northern District In the County of Hertford in the State of North Carolina Enumerated by me on the 25th day of July, 1850 John A.
