All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Larry Jones sanshag@aol.com June 29, 2010, 9:29 pm William Asa Overton A resident of Hertford County,N.C.Roster lists show that Asa was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Hertford County on May 22,1861.Present or accounted for until captured at Fort Hatteras on August 29,1861.He was confined at Fort Warren,Boston Harbor,until paroled on or about Jan.30,1862,and was then transferred for exchange.He was declared exchanged on Feb.20,1862.He was with his company until it was disbanded on March 20,1862. Asa later enlisted in Company C,17th Regiment N.C.Troops,(2nd Org.), on June 8,1863,for the duration of the war.Compiled service records indicate that he was present or accounted for until he was captured at Sugar Loaf,near Fort Fisher,on or about Feb.11,1865.After capture he was confined at Point Lookout Maryland,until he was released on June 29,1865,after taking the Oath of Allegiance.His release was approximately 2 and a half months after the surrender at Appomattox,Va.
