Hertford County, NC - World War I Draft Records ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WORLD WAR I DRAFT RECORDS FOR HERTFORD COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA WWI Records - Draft Boards Cities and counties with populations exceeding 45,000 were sub-divided into groups of approximately 30,000 residents. These smaller groups comprise the local draft boards and were supposed to be equivalent to the local voting precinct. The number of draft boards there are for a particular locality is directly related to its population. For example, the city of Chicago, Illinois had 86 draft boards, while Sacramento, California had only 2. Cities and counties that did not exceed the 45,000-population limitation only had one draft board. For researchers with ancestors who resided in larger cities, unless you know exactly where your ancestor lived and which precinct he was a part of; it will likely be necessary to search multiple draft boards. WWI Records - Draft Cards Draft cards are listed in alphabetical order by the registrant's last name. It’s important to note that there was a different registration card used for each of the three registration dates, so some of the information required on each card does vary. The basic information provided on draft registration cards includes: Full name of registrant, home address, birth date, birth location, whether native born, naturalized citizen, alien, declared intention, non-citizen or citizen Indian, race, occupation, physical description, and in many cases father's birthplace and nearest relative.
