Hertford County, NC - Early Years in Brief ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Herald Your Home Newspaper Ahoskie, NC 1909-1959 Date of Article Unknown Early Years In Brief 1622 ­ Chowan River explored by John Pory from Williamsburg, Virginia 1648 ­ Two Virginia settlers say they lived on Chowan between mouth of Wiccacon and Roanoke for short time 1657 ­ Nathaniel Batts living near mouth of Roanoke River before this year 1662 ­ Durant Deed, earliest land transaction in state, Perquimans County 1663 ­ Charles II grants Carolina to eight Lords Proprietors 1675 ­ Meherrin and Chowan Indians badly depleted in war with Virginians. Meherrins ordered north of Meherrin River. Chowan given preserve on Bennettıs Creek (present-day Gates County.) Settlers on west shore of Chowan River 1680's ­ Settlers along lower west bank of Chowan, some (unknown) northward 1703 ­ Richard Barfield known to own land in what is to be Hertford County 1712 ­ Tuscoraro War. Indians beaten and period of rapid settlement 1700-1722 ­ Settlers seat along Wiccacon, Meherrin, Cutawhiskey Swamp, Uraha Swamp, Kirby Creek. Meherrin Indians attacked again in 1707, reduced to remnant 1722 ­ Bertie Precinct is formed, all land west Chowan River. Heavy settlement continues along Chowan, Wiccacon and Meherrin 1724 ­ Courthouse and prison for Bertie Precinct are located at what is now Saint John's. A small building for Anglican worship had been built here before Bertie was formed.
