THE TIDEWATER NEWS – 01-08-1943

   Miss Jettie Norma Barnes, well-known resident of the Newsoms community, 
died suddenly Wednesday morning at her home after suffering ill health for 
many months. Miss Barnes returned home December 30 from a Richmond hospital 
and seemed greatly improved and her death comes as a severe shock to the 
family, having lost another sister on December 19.

   She was the daughter of the late Richard T. and Devilla Beale Barnes of 
Southampton County, a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church of Como and has made 
her life in the Newsoms community.

   Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Cristie Saunders of Newsoms, Miss Emily 
Barnes of Richmond, and Mrs. E.R. Bonniville of Miami, Fla.

   Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at Buckhorn 
Baptist Church, Como, by the Rev. J.L. Lanier, her pastor, assisted by the 
Rev. C.P. Cleveland and the Rev. L.G. Tinnell, both of Newsoms. Interment was 
made in the family plot near Como, pallbearers being Roswell Hart, Dr. J.M. 
Bland, Rosser Bryant, J.W. Bryant, V.K. Daughtrey, Jr., H.A. Barrett, Jarvis 
Howell and William Beale.
