Barnes of the Sunbeam community passed into eternity on December 19, 1942, at Raiford Hospital, Franklin, after a month’s extreme illness. Miss Barnes spent her entire life in her ancestral home, and was not only one of the most beloved citizens but one of the most useful; not in a public way, but quietly, cautiously, without stint of time or energy to the end of her useful and beautiful life here on earth. She was serving her Master first of all and out of her love and loyalty to her Maker she thereby ministered to her family, then to her neighbors and to everyone whose need she knew. Her Motto was “Do something good for somebody ever day,” and she lived it. The usefulness of her life, the firmness of her purpose, the quality of her mind, lifted her high in the esteem of the community in which she spent her entire life. Religion, charity, culture and tireless kindliness filled her abundant life. Burdens she had to bear which might well have crushed or embittered a woman of lesser spirit. They but made stronger and sweeter a woman already strong in spirit, and infinitely gentle in heart. Miss Barnes is survived by four sisters: Mrs. Cristie B. Saunders and Miss Norma Barnes of Sunbeam, Miss Emily Barnes of Richmond and Mrs. Randolph Bonniville of Miami, Fla., besides a number of relatives and close friends. Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon, December 21, at 2:30 o’clock from Buckhorn Church, Como, N.C., of which she was a life-long member. Services were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. J.L. Lanier, assisted by the Rev. C.P. Cleveland, pastor of Newsoms and Sunbeam Baptist churches. A choir composed of close friends sang “Abide With Me,” and Rev. Mr. Cleveland sang “Crossing The Bar” as a solo, accompanied on the organ by Miss Eddie Mae Vann. Interment was made in the old family burying ground near Como. The many beautiful flowers attested to the esteem in which she was held. Pallbearers were Julian B. Worrell, V.K. Daughtrey, Jr., Dr. J.M. Bland, Jarvin Howell, J. Roswell Hart, John W. Bryant, Rosser B. Bryant, H.A. Barrett and C.R. Everett. Contributed by her friend, Bernice F. Bryant.
