Suffering since last summer with a heart ailment, he became ill on Thursday and was brought to the local hospital. He was the son of the late Samuel and Elizabeth Taylor Barnes of the Como community, and a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church, in which he served for many years as a deacon and as teacher of the Young Men’s Bible Class of the Sunday school. Besides his wife, Mrs. Betty Parker Barnes of Como, he is survived by two sons, Thomas Rudolph Barnes of Canton, N.C., and Jarvis Bingham Barnes of Baltimore; four grandchildren; three brothers, Samuel Barnes of Aulander, N.C., Luther Barnes of Jackson, N.C., and Harry Barnes of Newport News; and two sisters, Mrs. Lycurgus Barrett and Mrs. Dewey Howell of Suffolk. Funeral services for Mr. Barnes were conducted at Buckhorn Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by the pastor, Rev. J.E. Lanier, followed by burial in the church cemetery. The pallbearers were Gavin Brett, Grant Curle, Lokie Sumner, Richard Taylor, Thomas Collins, Carl Howell, Robert Askew and Earl Holland.
