Miss Barnes was the daughter of the late Judge David A. Barnes and Mrs. Bettie Vaughan Barnes, both parents being of prominent families in Eastern North Carolina. She is survived by one brother Senator D.C. Barnes, and two sisters, Misses Sarah L. and Annie R. Barnes of Murfreesboro, besides a large family connection and a host of friends. Miss Bessie Barnes was a woman of exceptional attainments and of many rare graces of personality and mind. She was an occasional visitor in Franklin where she numbered many friends. A loyal communicant of the Episcopal Church, funeral rites were held from that church in Murfreesboro Wednesday afternoon at 4 o’clock conducted by the Rev. Leon Malone of that parish, assisted by Rev. Walter R. Noe, executive secretary of the Diocese of Eastern North Carolina. The active pallbearers were Senator W.H.S. Burgwyn, J.J. Parker, C.C. Lawrence, W.A. McGlohon, Senator Lloyd J. Lawrence, J.B. Worrell, L.M. Cox and W.B. Edwards. Burial was made in the Vaughan family cemetery in Murfreesboro.
