BARRETT PASSES AT HOME IN BOYKINS Richard Everett Barrett, well-known and esteemed citizen of Boykins, died August 8 after a lingering illness. Mr. Barrett was the son of the late Richard Alexander Barrett, who came to this county from Mississippi many years ago and settling in the Statesville community married Miss Martha Frances Everett of the well-known family of that name in this county. Mr. Barrett attended school at Buckhorn Academy, Como, N.C., studying under the venerable Captain Julian H. Picot, and later attended V.P.I. He was engaged in the lumber business at Severn, N.C., for some years, and had made his home in Boykins during the later years of his life where he was a good and useful citizen, active in civic affairs and served his county and district as a member of the Board of Supervisors of Southampton County. Early in life he joined Barnes M.E. Church in the Statesville community, being at all times a faithful, loyal and consistent communicant of his church. Besides his wife, Mrs. Adna Wood Barrett, he is survived by two children, Richard E. and Garnet Bailey Barrett; by three brothers, Thos. H. and Hugh A. Barrett of Statesville and J.E. Barrett of Carrsville; by two sisters, Mrs. Nettie B. Bryant and Mrs. Bessie B. Thorpe of the Newsoms section, and by a wide circle of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted from his late residence in Boykins last Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock by his Pastor, Rev. J.L. Kibler of the Boykins M.E. Church, assisted by Mr. Barrett’s nephew, Rev. Ormond R. Bryant, pastor of St. James’ M.E. Church, Richmond, and by the Rev. Frank B. Handley of the Boykins Baptist Church. Burial was made in the cemetery at Severn, N.C., a large assemblage of friends being in attendance. The active pallbearers were: A.L. Knight, L.A. Hill, J.H. Barnes, T.H. Barrett, H.A. Barrett, J.E. Barrett, Rosser Bryant and R.S. Edwards. Honorary bearers were selected from a number of friends.
