His death was attributed to complications following an operation for gall-stones. He was 66 years old. Mr. Basnight was president of the Basnight-Garrett Furniture and Undertaking company of Ahoskie, and the W.H. Basnight Wholesale Grocery Company of Ahoskie, and a partner in the Basnight Peanut Storage Company, Suffolk. He also owned seven or eight farms in the eastern section of North Carolina. He was a son of the late Thomas and Mrs. Mary Basnight of Creswell, N.C., and is survived by a son, W.H. Basnight, Ahoskie; two daughters, Mrs. Hal J. Lyon and Miss Ethel Basnight of Franklin; two grandsons, Howard and Ralph Basnight; a granddaughter, Halouise Lyon of Franklin; a brother, Dr. Thomas G. Basnight, of Stokes, N.C.,and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Byrum and Mrs. B.J. Rhodes, of Edenton, N.C. The body was forwarded to Ahoskie Monday afternoon, and funeral services were held there on Wednesday afternoon.
