Mrs. Bess was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Lucy Atkins Britt of Hertford County, and a member of the Meherrin Baptist Church of Murfreesboro. She moved to Franklin 23 years ago to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. J.K. Vann. Surviving her are four daughters, Mrs. Vann and Mrs. W.C. Stradley of Franklin, Mrs. Noami Stanley of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. R.E. Hoyt of Santa Cruz, Calif.; two sons, B.C. Bess of Murfreesboro, N.C., and R.C. Bess of Holland; 32 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, K.R. Britt of Conway, N.C., N.P. Britt of Murfreesboro, N.C., and L.E. Britt of Portsmouth. Funeral services for Mrs. Bess were conducted Tuesday afternoon at three o’clock in the Meherrin Baptist Church by the pastor, Rev. J.M. Duncan, assisted by Rev. L.M. Duncan, assisted by Rev. L.M. Kanipe of the Sycamore Baptist Church and Rev. Randolph Gregory of the Franklin Baptist Church. The choir of the church sang “Sometime We’ll Understand” and “Safe In the Arms of Jesus;” and a solo, “Sunrise,” was sung by Joel Cook Holland. The pall consisted of white calla lilies, white carnations, and a center inset of pink carnations. The floral tributes were beautiful and numerous from relatives and friends who loved her so well. The pallbearers were her grandsons, Julian E. Vann of Washington, N.C., Ray W. Vann of Norfolk, Raymond Bess of Holland, and Charles Stradley of Franklin, and her nephews, Allie and Arthur Britt of Portsmouth. Honorary pallbearers were her grandsons, Willard Hedgepeth of Conway, N.C., Vernon Bess and Lonnie D. Bess of Murfreesboro, N.C., William Henderson of Norfolk, Pfc. Ralph Stradley of Langley Field, and Lonnie Vann of Franklin. The remains of Mrs. Bess were interred in the Britt family cemetery near Murfreesboro beside her husband, who preceded her in death 36 years ago.
