(Spivey) Brett AHOSKIE - Hazel S. Brett of Ahoskie passed away Jan. 25, 2008, at the age of 93. Her celebration of life service will be at Ahoskie United Methodist Church on Tuesday, January 29 at 11:30 a.m. Prior to that, the family will visit with friends in the church’s education building from 10:30 to 11:30 p.m. The daughter of Charlie Lee and Mariah Harris Spivey, Hazel was one of 12 children, 10 of whom lived till adulthood. A native of Northampton County, Hazel was born in Lasker and graduated from Rich Square High School in 1932, an honor student. She continued her academies at East Carolina Teachers College where she enjoyed her music classes and played on the softball team. After two years, she graduated and began teaching in Potecasi’s elementary grades. However, in 1937, she married John Hayes Brett (now deceased), former Ahoskie City Clerk, and moved to his family’s home place in Ahoskie. The Bretts are survived by two children, Carolyn B. Mitchell and husband, Tommy, and Dr. John M. Brett and wife Rebecca, both of whom live in Ahoskie; and three grandchildren, Noel H. Mitchell, April M. Hewitt and husband, Ray, and Ian H. Brett and wifel, Amanda W. Hazel is also survived by her younger brother, Thomas Spivey and wife, Ann of Yorktown, Virginia, and many nieces and nephews. A lifetime Methodist, Hazel as a youth joined New Hope Methodist Church. After her marriage she became an active member of Ahoskie Methodist where she taught Sunday school to children for more than 30 years. She also sang soprano in the choir and served as president of the United Methodist Women. In the late 1950s, Hazel started a kindergarten in the church. Many townspeople registered their children at birth so that they could attend. Her end-of-the-year stage programs became famous and were well attended by parents and friends, eager to watch what the children had learned and could do. In her older age, Hazel continued to serve church and community by promoting and leading the first Community Bible Schools (summer), the AUMC Hettie Tucker Circle and the Council on Ministries. She looked forward to Sundays and attended her church as long as her health allowed. Also, in her later years, Hazel was presented a Volunteer’s Award by North Carolina’s Governor Martin in Raleigh. Always good in needlework, Hazel received two state first-place awards for her quilts, presented by the North Carolina Woman’s Club. By friends and family, Hazel was known to be generous and kind. In the summer no one left her home without fruits and vegetables from her small garden. At Guardian Care Nursing Home in Ahoskie, no one left her room without being thanked for the kindness which had been performed for her. Hazel lived all the commandments which she taught to her kindergarten children, her Sunday school children, her own children and her grandchildren. Her life made Hertford County a better place to live. In lieu of flowers, the family would encourage gifts to either the Ahoskie United Methodist Church memorial windows fund or to the church’s "Let the little children come..." Daycare Program. Garrett Funeral Home - Ashley Chapel of Ahoskie is in charge of services.
