She was 22 years of age. Mrs. Brett was a native of South Carolina, but came early in life with her parents to make her home near Sunbeam, where she lived until her marriage last winter, when she went to make her home in Como, N.C. She was a graduate of Newsoms High School, class of 1942. Surviving her are her husband and infant daughter, Jane Worth Brett; her parents and three brothers, John, George and Gary Smart of Sunbeam; and a number of relatives in North and South Carolina. Funeral services were conducted at Buckhorn Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon by her pastor, Rev. John W. Morrison of the Newsoms Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. John Lanier, her husband’s pastor. The deceased was a member of Mt. Horeb Methodist Church, and a choir composed mostly of Mt. Horeb members sang “Abide With Me.” Joel Cook Holland of Murfreesboro sang “Lead Kindly Light,” “Day Is Dying In The West” was sung at the graveside in the church cemetery. The casket was covered with a double spray of red rosebuds, Madonna lilies, baby’s breath and ferns. There were many other lovely floral pieces, and a large crowd bore witness of the love and esteem of her many friends and loved ones. We cannot understand why one so young, with life so full of promise, should have to leave us so soon. But “Sometime We’ll Understand.” “We will not think of her as dead,/ Who walks with us no more./ Along the paths of life we tread,/ She has but gone before.” The pallbearers were Ned Evans, Wilmer Wise, Walter Franklin Drake, Paul Icard, Grant Curle, Olin Lee and J.G. Cobb. Those who came from a distance for the funeral were: Mrs. G.S. Teague and Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Crommer of Whitmire, S.C.; John McCollum of Carlisle, S.C.; Mrs. Zeb McKinney and Bill Smart of Forest City, N.C.; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Icard of Raleigh, N.C.; Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Padgett and daughter, Polly of Camden, S.C. and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Harrell of Chapel Hill, N.C.
