Mr. Bryant was the son of the late William D. and Mrs. Martha Darden Bryant and was born in Southampton County January 16, 1858, his parents moving to Hertford County, N.C., about three years later where Mr. Bryant had spent his life. He had been in ill health for several months and sustained a paralytic stroke on Sunday, April 20, his death occurring three days later. In 1885 he married Miss Willie Brett of Como who survives him with eight children; O.P. Bryant of Hampton, Mrs. Lloyd Bittle of Como, J.E. Bryant of Boykins, Mrs. J.V. Simmons of Statesville, E.M. Bryant of Franklin, Mrs. F.T. Railey of Como, Mrs. S.R. Simmons of Statesville and Mrs. L.E. Zehbach of Franklin, and by seven grandchildren. He is also survived by five sisters; Mrs. Georgia Moore and Mrs. Annie L. Bryant of Suffolk, Mrs. J.D. Riddick of Riddicksville, Mrs. N. Lee Story of Newsoms and Mrs. Lucy Ashburn of Hampton. Mr. Bryant numbered a host of friends in his home community and in our town where he was a frequent visitor. He was a successful farmer and was noted as a lover of hunting and fishing. He had been a consistent member of New Hope M.E. Church since his boyhood, and bore an excellent reputation among his neighbors as an exemplary citizen. Funeral services were held from his late home Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. R. Harrison Marks of Newsoms, assisted by a former pastor Dr. R.H. Potts, presiding elder of the Norfolk Conference. Interment was made in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin, the body bearers being: J.T. Bryant, Dillard Stephenson, R.A. Majette, N.C. Barbour, M.E. Barrett, F.T. Pope, Harry Steinhardt and J.B. Ferguson. The honorary bearers were: Ernest Ferguson, L.E. Zehrbach, W.H Lankford, S.E. Brett, T.H. Barrett, R.B. Story, J.A. Bittle, L.P. Simmons, J. Ryland Warren, Geo. A. Gardner, Walter H. Norfleet, Dr. R.L. Raiford, J. Edgar Weede, M.H. Moore, Guy C. Hill, Hugh Lee, Walter Brett, E.J. Railey, Charles H. Whitley, W.T. Pace, Jr., Peter Taylor, Garnet Barnes, A.J. Bryant and R.B.
