He had been ill for some time. The son of the late Alfred Moore and Mrs. Betty Holley Darden, he was born in Elm Grove, Hertford County, N.C., in 1884. He was educated at Franklin Academy and at the public school then on Norfleet Street, spending the early part of his life here with his brother, the late Colgate W. Darden, Sr. For many years he was active in the insurance business in Norfolk and Newport News, and later became postmaster at Old Point. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bessie Kyle Darden; two daughters, Capt Elizabeth Darden, AUS, now in the Philippine Islands, and Mrs. A.A. Koscienlick of Devens, Mass.; one brother J.H. Darden of Elm Grove, N.C., one grandchild. His only son. Lt. Alfred C. Darden, Jr., was killed in World War II. Funeral services were conducted at the grave in Poplar Spring Cemetery on Monday at noon by Rev. J.A. Vache, rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. The active pallbearers were Pretlow Darden, C.W. Darden, Jr., Harvey Lindsay, Clarence G. Darden, J. Fenton Matthews, Joseph P. King, John Bell and A.C. Thompson.
