Colgate W. Darden, Sr., citizen of Franklin for 50 years, Chairman of the Board of the Merchants and Farmers Bank of Franklin, and father of Governor Colgate W. Darden Jr., of Virginia, died in Raiford Memorial Hospital here Monday evening at about 6:45 o’clock after sustaining a heart attack the same morning. Mr. Darden had been in poor health for many months. Mr. Darden was born in 1867 at Mapleton, Hertford County, N.C., the son of Alfred Moore and Mrs. Betty Holley Darden. His paternal grandparents, Alfred Whitehead and Mrs. Sallie Moore Darden, conducted an academy, Elm Grove, at their home prior to and following the Civil War, which young Mr. Darden attended, coming to Franklin at an early age where he was employed by the Albemarle Steam Navigation Company, first on it streamers and later as its General Freight and Passenger Agent a position which he filled with the company for many years. He married Miss Katherine Pretlow, daughtrey of Joshua and Mrs. Ann Butler Pretlow, of Marl Hill, this county, where they lived until Mrs. Darden’s death in 1936. There are three children of this marriage, the Governor of Virginia, Colgate Whitehead Darden, Jr., John Pretlow Darden and Mrs. Harvey Lee Lindsay of Norfolk; eight grandchildren; two brothers, J.H. Darden of Mapleton, N.C., and Alfred C. Darden of Old Point, besides several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his second wife, who was before her marriage, Mrs. Virginia Persons of Boykins. Funeral services for Mr. Darden were conducted from the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Wednesday at noon, where he was a former Vestryman, the service being read by the Rev. George Gunn, rector of Meadowbrook Episcopal Church, Norfolk. Burial was made at Beechwood, the ancestral home of the Pretlow family, the pallbearers being: S.W. Rawls, J. Fenton Matthews, G. Carl Steinhardt, George Watkins, T.P. Hylton, E.P. Jones, E.L. Beale and J. P. King. The casket pall was a basket of red roses with many beautiful floral designs, and there were a number of State officers in attendance, besides a large assemblance of friends.
