CHESLEY WALTER GARDNER

   Chester Walter Gardner, 70, husband of Mrs. Mamie Garrison Gardner of 
Murfreesboro, N.C., died in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie, N.C., on Monday, 
May 5, at 7:50 a.m. after several months of ill health.

   A native of Southampton County, he was a son of the late George A. Gardner 
and Mrs. Mary Cotton Gardner of Franklin. He attended Franklin Military Academy. 
For the past 45 years he had resided in Murfreesboro, and was the oldest member 
of the Murfreesboro Baptist Church. He was an honor Mason of 37 years.

   Following several years as field representative of the Plough Sales 
Corporation of Memphis, Tenn., Mr. Gardner was employed by the Albemarle Steam 
Navigation Company as purser on the Steamers Olive, Keystone and Carolina. At 
the time of his death he was co-owner of the Planters Hardware Company of 
Murfreesboro.

   Besides his wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Gardner Becker 
of Martinsville; one son, Charles Chesley Gardner of Norfolk; five 
grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Percy Cobb of Franklin; one half-brother, George 
A. Gardner, Jr., of Norfolk; and his stepmother, Mrs. George A. Gardner, Sr. of 
Portsmouth.

   Funeral services for Mr. Gardner were conducted at the Murfreesboro Baptist 
Church on Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. Warren F. Taylor, pastor of 
the Smithfield (Va.) Baptist Church, and Rev. F. Owen Fitzgerald, pastor of the 
Murfreesboro Methodist Church. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro.
