EUGENE NORFLEET GARDNER HENDERSON, N.C. – A funeral service for Dr. E. Norfleet Gardner was conducted in the First Baptist Church, Henderson, N.C., at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 14 by the pastor, Dr. W.W. Leathers Jr., Rev. Boyce Brooks of Boone, N.C. and Rev. Maurice Grisson of Lynchburg, Va. Burial with graveside services was in Poplar Spring Cemetery, Franklin, Va. at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Pallbearers were B.R. Ricks, J.C. Gardner, Clyde Jeffcoat, S.H. Watkins, L.E. Turner, Leon Frazier, B.C. Wells, R.G.S. Davis Jr., J.W. Jenkins, Jr. and Norris Sutton. Gardner, 73, retired Baptist minister, and for many years recording secretary of the Baptist State Convention and statistical secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention, died in Maria Parham Hospital, May 12 at 11 p.m. following an illness of several weeks. A native of Franklin he was a son of A.L. Gardner and Mrs. Lelia Norfleet Gardner. He was educated in the Franklin Seminary, and received the A.B. and A.M. degrees from the University of Richmond, which later gave him the doctor of divinity degree. He received the master of theology degree from Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and studied in the University of Chicago. His first pastorate was in Pendleton and Como, N.C., later becoming pastor at the Baptist Children’s Home in Thomasville. From there he went to the First Baptist Church in Dunn for several years, transferring to Henderson First Baptist Church, where he served 13 years. On leaving there he served the First Baptist Church in Laurinburg, seven years. On retirement, he established his residence in Henderson. Twice he was interim, editor of charity and children’s home. He was president of three rotary clubs where he served as pastor, including Henderson. He was the author of several books. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mattie Macon Gardner; two daughters, Mrs. Robert H. Hathaway of Richmond, Va. and Mrs. Joe Leon Wilson, Liberty, Mo., Missionaries to Thailand; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Arthur H. Jackson of Hertford, Conn.; and a stepson L. Norman White of New York City; a sister, Mrs. W.H. Pierce of Whitestone, Va. and eight grandchildren.
