ROBERT EDWARD LEE

Robert Edward Lee of Hertford County, N.C., died at the State Hospital in 
Raleigh, N.C., Saturday, July 26, taking his own life by hanging himself from a 
second story window of the building by means of a window cord. 

Mr. Lee was well known in Franklin and Southampton and has a host of warm 
friends in our town and county, who admired him for his many sterling qualities 
of character, his genial personality and true and loyal friendship, and who 
mourn deeply and sincerely with his loved ones in the crushing sorrow which has 
come into their lives. “Bob” Lee, as everybody called him, was of an unusually 
lovable disposition, a kind and indulgent husband and father and an unselfish 
and generous neighbor and friend.

  He had been in poor health since last winter, spending some time at Lakeview 
Hospital, Suffolk, and afterwards taking treatment for chronic organic trouble 
in Richmond where before mental derangement set in and he was sent to Raleigh in 
the hope of his friends that in a few months both health and reason would be 
restored.

  He was the son of the late Lemuel F. Lee of Hertford County, and besides his 
widow, who was Miss Anna Marie Vick of this county, he leaves three children, 
Edward, Elizabeth and R.E. Lee, Jr.; one brother, Hugh F. Lee and a sister, Miss 
Hattie Lee of Hertford County. His funeral was conducted at his home on Sunday 
afternoon July 27, by Reverends W.R. Evans and L.F. Paulette of Newsoms, and his 
body was laid to rest in the family burial plot at his pretty county home near 
Statesville.
