MAJETTE, PROMINENT CITIZEN OF COMO, KILLED BY TRUCK Jethro Barnes Majette, prominent citizen of Como, was instantly killed by a Franklin Peanut Company truck in front of his home Saturday morning, the truck being driven by Fletcher Darden, colored. Mr. Majette, who was the son of the late J.G. Majette of Como and Mrs. Blanch Majette of Virginia Beach, was one of the most useful and public-spirited men of his community and county, and universal regret has been expressed at the tragic nature of his death. He was active in church, civic and political affairs in Hertford County, and had served for several years as chairman of the County Board of Elections. Since his father’s death a number of years ago, he had been cultivating the old Majette Homestead where several generations of his family have lived, and was representative of the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company of Suffolk with headquarters at Ahoskie, N.C. In the presence of one of the largest crowds ever assembled in the Como community, funeral rites for Mr. Majette were conducted Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock from the home in Como, Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner of Dunn, N.C., a former Pastor at Como, officiating. Rev. Mr. Robinson, pastor of the Como church assisted in the service, and interment was made in the family burial plot on the plantation. The active pallbearers were: H. McDonald Spiers, Julian B. Worrell, Heber J. Vann, Guy C. Hill and Rufus E. Darden of Como; D.C. Barnes of Murfreesboro, T.H. Barrett of Statesville and C.H. Murton of Suffolk.
