Bell HERTFORD -- Hazel Eugene Simpson Bell, 87, formerly of Felton, Del., died March 14, 2003. A graveside service will at 2 p.m. Monday in Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford. Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, is in charge. April 13, 2003 Sadie L. Davis HERTFORD -- Sadie Mae Mizelle Leary Davis, 92, died April 11, 2003. A graveside service will be held Monday at 11a.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton. Twiford Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, is in charge. Harriett Brinn HERTFORD -- Memorial services for Harriett Brinn, 51, of Neptune Beach, Fla., who died March 29, 2003, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hertford. Hurdle HERTFORD - Hazel Blanchard Hurdle, 79, a native of Gates County, died April 6, 2003 in Country Oaks Manor. She was the widow of Howard Doctrine Hurdle. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Mount Sinai Baptist Church by the Rev. Howard Sutton and the Rev. George Wilmore. Burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. Mrs. Hurdle was the cafeteria manager at Gates County High School. A homemaker, she was a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church, its W.M.U. and had served as a G.A. Leader and worker in the Vacation Bible School program. Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca H. Hamill of Greenville and Miriam H. Hurdle of Hertford; a son, H. Wayne Hurdle of Winfall; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Virginian-Pilot Mar. 24, 2003 Roland W. Donath HERTFORD -- Roland William Donath, 83, of the 100 block of Lazy West Lane, died March 22, 2003. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, is in charge. Wilburn C. Finch HERTFORD -- Wilburn Carlyle Finch, 83, of the 100 block of Sycamore St., died April 6, 2003 in his home. Born in Henderson, N.C., he was the son of the late Annie Satterwhite and Lattie Finch. He retired as a lieutenant after 30 years with the U.S. Navy and later worked as a manager of Aimes and Brownley in Norfolk. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve, American Legion Post No. 126 and the Retired Officers Association. Survivors include his wife, Mary Earnshaw Finch; a son, Wilburn C. Finch Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Louise L. Crews of Greensboro, N.C.; a brother, Harold Eugene Finch of West Columbia, S.C.; and a grandson, Jason David Reeder of Portland, Ore. He was predeceased by a daughter, Wanda Lee Reeder. The body is being cremated. No service is planned at this time. Harrell HERTFORD - Violet Nokomis Harrell, 83, a native of Gates County, died Oct 23, 2002 in Albemarle Hospital. Harrell was the daughter of the late Joe Polly Harrell and Zebulon Vance Harrell. She was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church, attended Woodland United Methodist Church, was active as an adult leader with the 4-H and was a member of White Hat Home Demonstration Club. A funeral was held Oct. 26, 2002 in Woodland United Methodist Church with a graveside service held at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Eure. Memorials may be sent to Woodland United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund, 352 Woodland Church Road, Hertford, NC 27944. Survivors include her husband, James Wesley Harrell; two daughters and June Piland of Clayton, NC and Jill Kahl of Hertford; four sons, Pat Harrell, Jesse Harrell, Joe Allen Harrell and Jimmy Harrell, all of Hertford; a sister, Marigold Byrd of Suffolk, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Emma Clemons MURFREESBORO -- Emma Clemons, 93, of the 100 block of Parker Road, died April 23, 2003. A funeral will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Nebo Baptist Church. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge. Evie W. Byrum HERTFORD -- Evie White Winslow Byrum, 77, of the 900 block of Beech Springs Road, died Sunday afternoon, April 20, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital. Born in Bertie County, she was the widow of both the late Carson Winslow and the late Gilbert Byrum and the daughter of the late Myrtle Phelps and Daniel White. She worked as a seamstress in garment manufacturing and attended Hunters Fork Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include four daughters, Frances Copeland of Belvidere, Evie Castelow of Cofield, N.C., Myrtle Ramos of Seven Springs, N.C., and Rebecca White of Hertford; two sons, Daniel Belcher of Chesapeake and Carson White of Hertford; a stepson, James Byrum of Tyner; three sisters, Vivian White of Windsor, N.C., Vinnie Overton and Revie Allen, both of Chesapeake; 15 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Willard White. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in Hunters Fork Pentecostal Holiness Church with Terry White and Deloras Meads officiating. Burial will follow in Up River Cemetery with Swindell Funeral Home of Hertford in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hunters Fork Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1211 Beech Springs Road, Tyner, NC 27980. Bertie S. Meekins MANTEO -- Bertie S. Meekins, 88, passed away April 23, 2003 in Britthaven Nursing Home, Nags Head. Born in East Lake to the late Murray Douglas and Alethia Sanderling Sawyer, she was the wife of the late Kenneth G. Ward and Harry Meekins. Bertie was an active and devoted member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church and a graduate of East Carolina University. "Miss Bertie," as she was known to her beloved students, was a teacher at Manteo Elementary School for 25 years until her retirement. After retirement, she worked at the Galleon for 14 years. She is survived by a daughter, Diana Ward Miller and her loving friend Allen Ramsey of Manteo; a granddaughter, Lisa D. Midgett of Phoenix, Ariz.; a grandson, Kenneth D. Midgett; six great-grandchildren, Jake, Gabe and Eli Coakley of Phoenix, Caleb Midgett and Jonathan A. Midgett of Nags Head and Laura Beth Ribeiro of Wanchese; and a great-great-granddaughter, Maiya Rose Ribeiro. Also surviving are a sister, Estelle Mann; a very special friend, Luther B. Culpepper Sr.; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Meekins was predeceased by three brothers, Dick, Calvin and Roland Sawyer and three sisters, Ruth Cullen, Margie Mann and Peggy Etheridge. A funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Mount Olivet United Methodist Church with burial in Manteo Cemetery. Friends may join the family at Twiford Funeral Home, Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. Wailon R. Jordan Sr. PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Wailon R. Jordan Sr., 80, a native of Hertford County, died April 6, 2003 along with his wife, Eva N. Jordan. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Evangelical Church, 1800 Elm Ave., Portsmouth, by the Rev. Marvin Leathers. Burial with military rites will be in National Cemetery, Hampton. Fisher Funeral Home is in charge. Jordan was a member of Community Presbyterian Church where he was an usher. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 35 years of service and from the Naval Hospital after four years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include three daughters, Cynthia Smith, Deborah J. Johnson and Giovon N. Lewis; a son, Wailon R. Jordan Jr.; two sisters, Mary Ward and Edna "Cookie"; three brothers, Russell Jordan, Harry Jordan and Willie Jordan; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
