Guy Carleton Picot, prominent retired farmer and merchant, died at his home in Como, N.C., at 2 o’clock Sunday morning, June 5, after several months of failing health. At the time of his death he was 98 years, two months and 16 days old, having been born on March 20, 1857. A life-long resident of Hertford County, N.C., he was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church, in which he served as senior deacon for many years. He was the son of Capt. Julian Henri Picot of Plymouth, N.C., and Antoinette Sara Vann Picot of Como. His wife, the former Rosalind Darden of Newsoms, died in January, 1952. His grandfather came to this country with Marquis de la Fayette during the Revolution, eventually settling near Plymouth, N.C. Capt. Picot, father of the deceased, was long associated with Buckhorn Academy, an exclusive private school for boys, which during its heyday attracted students from a wide area in North Carolina and Virginia. To his relatives and his host of friends Mr. Picot was affectionately known as “Bro’Gay.” To hundreds of sportsmen throughout several states he was “Judge Picot of Camp P.D.,” he being the last remaining charter member of the hunt club which had its origin in 1887. Surviving are five daughters, Misses Antoinette Vann Picot, Hannah Barham Picot, Marietta Blount Picot and Marion Barham Picot, all of Como, and Mrs. Vernon Tucker (the former Rebie Picot) of Suffolk; three sons, Harvey Baylis Picot of Franklin, Hugh Baird Picot of Como, and Guy Carleton Picot, Jr., of Richmond; five grandchildren; and a brother, Maury W. Picot of Suffolk. Two sons, Scarborough and Hallette, preceded their father to the grave several years ago. Funeral services were conducted at Buckhorn Baptist Church on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock by Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner of Laurinburg, N.C. , Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Portsmouth, Rev. L.E. Bailey, retired, of Powellsville, N.C., and Rev. J.E. Lanier, retired of Rocky Mount, N.C. Burial was in the church cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were members of Camp P.D. Active pallbearers were Jack Cassada, Picot Cassada and William Picot, all of Norfolk, Rufus Darden and Davis B. Spiers of Como, Edward Parker of Goldsboro, N.C., Carleton Picot of Suffolk, and William Van Savage of Churchland.
