THE TIDEWATER NEWS – 12-08-1939, P. 10 The funeral of Mrs. Lizzie Beale Porter, who died suddenly Wednesday night, November 29, at the home of her brother-in-law, H.W. Porter, near Handsom, was conducted Friday, December 1, at Mt. Horeb Church by Rev. C.P. Cleveland and Rev. F.L. Baker. The choir sang several of Mrs. Porter’s favorite hymns and burial was in the family cemetery on the old Porter homestead about two miles from the church. The casket was covered with a pall of white and lavender chrysanthemums with fern and gypsophila. There were many other beautiful flowers and a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends, mostly from Southampton County in which she had spent her entire life of 67 years. Pallbearers were J.T., J.W. and L.L. Bryant, K.R. Bishop, J.A. Fowler, J.R. Worrell and J.C. Johnson. Mrs. Porter was a member of Sunbeam Baptist Church but had worked all her life in Mt. Horeb M.E. Church and was at the time of her death a member of the Sunday school, the Woman’s Missionary Society and an honorary member of the Young People’s division, having been treasurer of that division for many years. Perhaps no other person in the span of her life had attended as many services at this church as she, and of her it can well be said. She went about doing good, feeding and clothing the needy, nursing the sick and cheering the downcast. The prayer and sympathy of the community go out to the bereaved husband so lonely in the shadows of the even-tide of his life. He will miss her most and many others will miss Miss Lizzie too. – Communicated.
