SPURGEON JOHN RAILEY DR. S.J. RAILEY TAKES OWN LIFE BY DRAUGHT OF CARBOLIC ACID Dr. Spurgeon J. Railey, prominent physician of this county, killed himself at his home near Sunbeam Wednesday morning by drinking carbolic acid, death occurring in about 15 minutes. Dr. Railey had not been in good health for two years or more, his physical condition being the only reason given for his unfortunate act. According to reports of the tragedy, Dr. Railey arose Wednesday morning about 4 o’clock and drank the acid, his wife waking in time to strike the glass from his hand before he had consumed all of the liquid. A neighbor drove hurriedly to Franklin for medical help but before Dr. E.J. Nance could reach the Railey home, Dr. Railey was dead. The deceased was the son of John Railey of the Como community and of the late Mrs. Martha Brett Railey, his mother dying in January 1929. Besides his wife, who was Miss Frances Pond of Suffolk, he is survived by his aged father; by three brothers, Eddie and Marvin Railey of the Como neighborhood and J.G. Railey of the Newsoms community; by two sisters, Mrs. Luther Barnes of Suffolk and Mrs. Stella Brown of Como. Dr. Railey attended the Franklin Military Academy and was a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia. He practiced medicine at Como for a few months, then moving to Sunbeam where he had been practicing for nearly 20 years. He was 48 years of age, a member of Mt. Horeb M.E. Church and of the Southampton Medical Society. Funeral services were conducted at the graveside in the family burial plot at his father’s home yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock by the Rev. R. Harrison Marks, pastor of the Newsoms charge. The body bearers were: Otis Railey, Granville Railey, Willie Griffin, Russell Railey, Gordon Brett, J.B. Ferguson and J.C. Brett. Honorary, J.T.
