Hertford County, NC - Obituary of Susan B. Scharcht ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Petersburg Daily Index Petersburg, VA April 19, 1868 DEATH: Death of a VERNARABLE and WELL-KNOWN LADY – HER REMAINS BOUGHT TO PETERSBURG FOR INTERMENT. – Died at Louisa C. H., Va., April 14, 1869, of paralysis Mrs. Susan B. Scharcht, aged seventy-three years. On Friday morning the remains of this venerable lady, who will be remembered as the widow of the late Col. Edward Pescud, of this city, and daughter of the illustrious Peter Francisco, of Revolutionary fame – were bought to Petersburg for interment, in charge of her son, Mr. P.F. Pescud, of Raleigh, N.C. – and laid to rest in Blandford Cemetery. It was but a few weeks ago that we were called upon to chronicle the death, (from the same disease that terminated the life of the mother) of her son Mr. Norborne S. Pescud, near this city, and it may be mentioned as a remarkable incident, that at the burial of the former, on Friday, the grave of the latter caved in upon hers – and the two between whom there always existed the most tender affection – were laid side by side under the same sod. At the same time, the remains of Colonel Pescud were removed from the Spotswood Square, and interred by the side of the wife and son. The deceased, we believe, is the last of the immediate family of Peter Francisco. Of her own family, once so large, so gay and so popular, there now remain but four – Mr. P.F. Pescud, a prominent citizen and druggist of Raleigh, N.C., Mrs. Marceline A. Gatling of Prince George’s county, near Petersburg,; Mrs. Kate B. Alberton, Hertford county, N.C., and one other daughter whom we cannot now locate. Owing to the feeble condition of her mind and body, the death of her son Norborne was never communicated to her. The deceased left many dear friends in this community, and a large number of acquaintances who have a pleasing remembrance of her worth. She was a woman of great physical strength, of vigorous intellect, and of wonderful energy. Her husband, Col. Edward Pescud, and the editor of the Republican, a newspaper published in Petersburg a great many years ago – a man of kind heart and genial manners, and who is well remembered by our older citizens. __________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
