HERSEY EDWARD UNDERWOOD

Hersey Edward Underwood, 93, of the Franklin community, a veteran of the 
Spanish-American War, died Wednesday in McGuire Veterans Hospital, Richmond, 
after many weeks of illness.
A native of Hertford County, N.C., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Ella Mae 
Stephenson Underwood and a son of Hersey and Mrs. Leah Umphlett Underwood.
He was a member of Tucker Swamp Baptist Church.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Luther B. Dunlow of Franklin, Misses Maggie 
Underwood and Eunice Underwood of Suffolk, Miss Virgie Underwood of Whaleyville 
and Mrs. John McKenny of Hampton; four sons, Lloyd Underwood, Phillip Underwood 
and Edward Underwood of Suffolk and Herman Underwood of Emporia; 29 
grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in W.J.M. Holland and Sons 
Funeral Home by his former pastor, the Rev. Waverly Horne of Deer Park Baptist 
Church, Newport News. Burial will be in Black Creek Church Cemetery near 
Franklin.
Pallbearers were George Dunlow, James Dunlow, Carlton Cutchin, Lonnie Unphlett, 
Lewis Umphlett and Walter Franklin Drake.
