He had been active in the life of his native State and in religious and civic affairs of Hertford County during a long and useful life, and his pleasant country home had been for many years the centre of hospitality for hundreds of friends throughout Eastern North Carolina and lower Tidewater Virginia. He was a deacon of Buckhorn Baptist Church at Como and had served for a long time as trustee of Chowan College, Murfreesboro. Mr. Vann was a gallant Confederate soldier, serving until the surrender with a Hertford County command. He is survived by six daughters; Mrs. H.B. Parker of Goldboro, N.C., Mrs. R.A. Majette, Miss Josephine Vann, Mrs. H. McDonald Spiers of Como, Mrs. Thos. B. Wynn of Murfreesboro and Miss Eddie Mae Vann of Como; by one son, Heber J. Vann of Como; by a brother, Dr. R.T. Vann of Raleigh, well-known North Carolina Baptist leader, and by one sister, Mrs. Pleasant Holloman of Ahoskie, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted from Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como, Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock with interment to follow in the family burial plot near his home.
