He was the son of the late Albert G. and Mrs. Harriet Boyette Vann of Hertford County. Mr. Vann, who was born April 22, 1846, spending his entire life in the county of his nativity. His grandfather, John Vann, was one of Hertford’s most distinguished sons, serving in the State Senate and House of Representatives, and being chairman of the old “Court of Appeals and Quarter Sessions” of Hertford County for many years. Of pioneer stock and a member of a family leaders in that part of North Carolina for a long period of years he inherited the rugged virtues of his ancestors and was a man of pronounced convictions, intense individualism, a keen sense of justice, energy and thrift. Although never seeking elective office of any kind, he had served his county acceptably as county, surveyor, justice of the peace and county commissioner; was a trustee of North Carolina State College, Raleigh, until his health failed and was for a long term of years a trustee of Chowan College, Murfreesboro. He entered the service of the Southern Confederacy something over a year before the close of the war in Company B., 40th North Carolina Regiment, giving to that cause the same unflinching tenacity which characterized his life, and was with Lee at Appomattox returning to the drained and exhausted South, like thousands of others, to rebuild a civilization under the most trying human circumstance. The 1871 he married Anquilla D. Brett of Hertford County, and their home, the old Brett place near Como, surrounded by his extensive farm lands, was a place which the finest flavor of true hospitality has enshrined in the hearts of the hundreds of people who have been entertained within its walls throughout the 60 years of his residence there. No home in Eastern North Carolina was such a gathering place for young and old, a gracious, abundant and unaffected hospitality being experienced by all who knew and visited the Vanns. Mrs. Vann died in 1911, and surviving Mr. Vann are six daughter; Mrs. H.B. Parker of Goldsboro, N.C., Mrs. R.A. Majette, Miss Josephine Vann, Mrs. H. McDonald Spiers and Miss Eddie Mae Vann of Como and Mrs. T.B. Wynn of Murfreesboro; one son, Heber J. Vann of Como; a brother, Dr. R.T. Vann of Raleigh; a sister, Mrs. Pleasant Holloman of Ahoskie, and a large and prominent family connection. Mr. Vann was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como, and served on its board of deacons for many years. He ever took an active interest in his church and the work of the denomination throughout North Carolina. Keen, alert and vigorous in his thinking to the last, even through the ten years of his invalidism, his through grasp and knowledge of State and National affairs was truly remarkable to the writer as he would, on all too infrequent occasions. Sit by his bedside and discuss current events with him. His funeral was held last Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock from Buckhorn Baptist Church in the presence of a great assemblage of friends from North Carolina and Virginia. Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner, Rev. L.E. Dailey and Rev. J.L. Price, three of his former pastors, and Dr. W.R. Burrell participated in the services. A touch of the Old South, reminiscent of the relations of master and servant in the older days, was the presence of Albert Vann, venerable negro coachman of the family for 61 years, born in the Vann plantation and spending his life in service to Mr. Vann. Albert rode in one of the cars with the family and was given a seat of honor in the church. The active pallbearers were: T.B. Wynn, H.B. Parker, R.A. Majette, H. McDonald Spiers, Heber J. Vann, Toy D. Savage, J.N. Vann and Peyton Holloman. The honorary bearers were: S.P. Winborne, J.C. Taylor, J.L. Howell, J.W. Railey, B. Ferguson, Hugh Lee, R.B. Bryant, J.B. Majette, J.B.
