All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/nc/ncfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Bruce Saunders bs4403@verizon.net October 14, 2013, 7:37 am THE TIDEWATER NEWS – 12-09-1938, P. 1 WALTER ROY WARREN BOYKINS MAN KILLED WHILE LOADING LOG TRUCK WEDNESDAY Walter Roy Warren, 41 year old resident of the Boykins community, met sudden death Wednesday morning at about 11:45, when the last log he had loaded on a truck rolled from the top of the pile and crushed his skull as it struck him. Warren’s neck and jaw were also broken. The accident occurred at a sawmill on a dirt road between Newsoms and Boykins. Warren was being assisted by a colored man, who was not hurt. Dr. B.A. Pope of Newsoms was summoned to the scene but Warren was dead when he arrived. The body was taken to the H.M. Purviance Funeral Home in Boykins. The log truck was said to have been owned by N.T. Smith, from whose home at “Cross Keys” on the Courtland-Boykins highway funeral services were conducted this (Friday) afternoon at 2 o’clock. The following acted as pallbearers: R.T. Tompkins, L.F. Draper, E.T. Draper, E.L. Allen, Walter Lee and Jack Griffin. Mr. Warren, a World War veteran, was the son of the late Thomas K. and Ida Warren, and is survived by his wife; three sons, Roy Warren of Waverly, and Kelton and Herman Warren of the home place near “Cross Keys”; four brothers, T.K. Warren of Murfreesboro; H.G. Warren of Norfolk; Paul Warren of New Bern, N.C.; Bartell Warren of New York; also a half-brother, T.C. Warren of Murfreesboro; a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Parker of Roanoke Rapids, and one grandson. The services were conducted by the Rev. F.B. Handley of Boykins Baptist Church, burial following in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins.
