ACCIDENT EARLY SUNDAY RESULTS IN ONE FATALITY YOUNG CAROLINIAN DIES INSTANTLY WHEN CAR OVERTURNS; TWO COMPANIONS ARE HOSPITALIZED WITH INJURIES. One man was killed early Sunday morning and two were seriously injured when their car swerved from U.S. Highway 58 three miles east of Franklin, overturned and crashed on the Seaboard railroad tracks nearby. John Washington Vann, Jr., 21, of Corapeake, N.C., died instantly of a compound fracture of the skull; and Joseph A. Eure of Route 1, Holland, the driver of the car, and Bernard R. Allen, also of Holland, are in Raiford Memorial Hospital, suffering abrasions and brain concussions. Allen also has a fractured jaw. Dr. T.A. Morgan, Southampton County coroner, who handled the medical investigations because of the proximity of the accident to Franklin, reveals that both Allen and Eure are in a “satisfactory condition.” The accident happened about 5 o’clock, and it is presumed that the men were heading for Vann’s home at the time. Isle of Wight County Sheriff S.V. Butler, who investigated the accident, said Eure would be held for manslaughter on his discharge from the hospital. Funeral services for young Vann were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Eureka Baptist Church, Corapeake.
