Gilliam C. Bentley, pastor of High Street Methodist Church, Franklin. Burial was in Black Jack Cemetery, near Como, N.C. Active pallbearers were Norman Britt, Robert Beale, Guy Carter, Sam Whitley, Smith Whitley and Elmo Whitley. A native of Como, N.C., Mrs. Whitley had lived in Portsmouth 20 years. She was the wife of Wilbert Norman Whitley of Portsmouth, and a daughter of John and Mrs. Odelia Whitley Carter of Como. She was a member of Cashie Baptist Church, Windsor, N.C. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Reubin C. Whitley of Franklin and Norman L. Whitley of Portsmouth; three brothers, Johnnie Carter of Franklin, l.M. Carter of Handsom and R.G. Carter of Newsoms; two sisters, Mrs. Odelia McKinney and Mrs. Marion Beale of Petersburg, and five grandchildren.
