Raiford, of Franklin, Va., acting for Coroner Lunsden Horton, of Hertford County. Sheriff C.W. Parker was conducting an investigation tonight on the possibility the woman was slain and her body thrown in the river. A woman’s scream was reported to have been heard in the section near where the body was found. Dr. Raiford, who performed an autopsy, said the girl was an expectant mother. He said that her skull was not fractured, but the death probably was due to a blow over the left eye, the lid of which was smashed. The girl who recently had been working in the Suffolk drug store and who had worked in Franklin, was fully clothed when found in the river by a group of men loading pulp wood on a boat. A wrist watch which she wore had stopped at 6 o’clock. The body was found at 3:30 o’clock a short distance from the bridge on Highway No. 258. Dr. Raiford estimated the body had been in the water from eight to 14 hours. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Whitley of the Como community. Funeral services will be conducted at the grave near the home Saturday afternoon.
