WINBORNE DIES AT HOME IN COMO Samuel Pretlow Winborne well-known resident and prominent farmer of Hertford County died at his home, “Cedar Hill” near Como, N.C., Friday morning after a long illness. He was born August 16, 1866 in Como and was the son of Major Samuel Darden Winborne and Mrs. Mary Pretlow Massenburg Winborne of Herford County. He was educated at Horner’s Military Academy, Oxford, N.C., and at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the national Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. Mr. Winborne was always an outstanding resident and leader in his community and county. For a number of years was on the Board of Commissioners of Hertford County, Trustee of the local School Board, a deacon in Buckhorn Baptist Church and Trustee of Chowan College. He was married November 2, 1892 to Miss Jessie Jones, daughter of the late Rev. Reuben and Mrs. Susan Deane Jones of Churchland. Besides his wife he is survived by four daughters, Miss Mary P. Winborne of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Jethro B. Majette of Como, Mrs. W.J.M. Holland, Jr., of Franklin and Miss Dora Winborne of Como; five grandchildren, Jethro B. Majette, Jr., of Como, Miss Helen Jones Majette of Duke University Hospital, Durham, Joseph Pretlow Majette, U.S. Navy, in the Pacific, W.J.M. Holland, III, and Samuel Winborne Holland of Franklin and a number of nieces and nephews, among them State Utilities Commissioner Stanley Winborne of Raleigh. The body was taken to the funeral home of W.J.M. Holland & Sons, Franklin, remained there until Saturday afternoon, when it was taken to Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como, for services at 4 p.m., by the pastor, Rev. J.E. Lanier. Burial was made in Buckhorn Cemetery. The pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Winborne: B. Winborne, Winborne Savage, Tom Burbage, Tommy Winborne, Robert Campbell and Roger Winborne.
