There is a copy in the Tabitha Marie DeVisconti Papers at East Carolina University and in the hands of a number of Carr descendants. Will Written 1 May 1773 Nansemond County, Virginia In the name of God Amen. I, Robert Carr of Virginia, and County of Nansemond, being sick and weak in body, but in perfect mind and memory, thanks be to God for it, and calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing it is appointed for all men to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament. Principally, and first of all, I recommend my soul into the hands of God and my body to the ground to be buried in a Christian-like manner at the discretion of my Executors; and as to such worldly estate which it has pleased to bless me with in this life, I give in the following manner and form: First: I give to my loving son, JOSHUA CARR, all my lands on the south side of Nottoway river in the county of Nansemond, except the pine wood land, he allowing his mother the free use and liberty of the one half thereof together with the Plantation I now live on during her natural life or widowhood, and after her death or widowhood, to him the said Joshua Carr and his heirs forever. I also give him my Still and one third part of all the liquors made on the said Plantation, he stilling the other part for his mother toll free. I likewise give him two cows and calves, one feather bed and furniture, one iron pot, one pan, one pewter dish and basin, half a dozen plates, one negro boy called Harry, after his mother's death or widowhood, to him and his heirs for ever. Secondly: I give to my loving wife, MARY CARR, during her natural life or widowhood the rest of my negroes, to-wit: One negro fellow called Sam, one called Pompy, one negro wench called Kate, one called Rose, and one called Venus; I also leave to my loving wife MARY CARR, all my household furniture except such as shall hereafter to be mentioned or given to my children the use of them during her natural life or widowhood for the help and maintenance of all my daughters during the time they remain single. Thirdly: I give to my loving daughter ELIZABETH CARR, one feather bed and furniture, one pewter dish, one basin, six plates, two cows and calves, one negro girl called Jenny, to her and her heirs forever. Fourthly: I give to my loving daughter MARY CARR, one feather bed and furniture, one pewter dish, one basin, six plates, two cows and caves and fifty pounds cash, the cash to be paid when she shall come to the age of eighteen years, or a negro girl of the value of fifty pounds if she should choose it rather than the cash to her and her heirs forever. Fifthly: I give to my loving daughter MARTHA CARR, one feather bed and furniture, one pewter dish, one basin, six plates, two cows and calves, one negro boy Jim, to her and her heirs forever. Sixthly: I give to my loving daughter LYDIA CARR, one feather bed and Furniture, one pewter dish, one basin, six plates, two cows and calves, one negro boy Abram, to her and her heirs forever. Seventhly: I give to my loving son Titus Carr, five pounds cash, him and his heirs forever Eighthly: I give to my loving son MATTHEW CARR, the Plantation whereon he now dwells, together with half my land, or near it that lies in Hertford County, North Carolina, it being that part of my land lying on the south side of the water hole branch to the head of the northeast prong to a pine a made corner, then along a line of marked trees near a southwest course to a red oak standing at the fork of the roads, one to Hill's bridge, and the other to Washington's and Brown's, then running on Hill’s road near south to my line; also a fishing place on Meherrin river; also the particulars which I have already put in his possession to him and his heirs forever. Ninthly: I give to my loving son ROBERT CARR, the Plantation he now dwells on, And all the other part of my land in Hertford County; also the particulars which I have already put in his possession to him and his heirs forever Tenthly: After wife's death or widowhood, I give to my three sons, ROBERT CARR, MATTHEW CARR, and TITUS CARR, three of my negroes, one a piece, which they may make choice, to them and their heirs forever. And the rest of my Negroes and their increase I leave to be squarely divided among my children then living. Likewise all the rest of my estate in any kind or quality whatsoever, land excepted, to be squarely divided among all my children then living, to them and their heirs forever. Eleventhly: My will and desire is that my pine wood land bought of Col. Jesse Brown, be sold by my three sons, ROBERT CARR, MATTHEW CARR, and TITUS CARR, and the money arising thereby to be squarely divided among them three, to them and their heirs forever. I do hereby appoint my two sons, TITUS CARR and JOSHUA CARR, my whole and sole Executors to this my last Will, revoking and disannuling all other former Wills by me made, ratifying this and no other to be my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof, I, the said ROBERT CARR, have hereunto set my hand and seal the first day of May and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and seventy-three.
