Hart of [Company] ‘D’ took 100 men on the steamer, Col. Rucker, to Swan Quarter, near the mouth of the Pamlico River. Their object was the rescue of certain union men from prison. They met no armed resistance and found no prisoners. After a few hours sojourn, long enough for a taste of the local honey and peach brandy, they returned to New Berne. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Source: "A Record of the 23rd Regiment Mass.
