(No names mentioned) A prominent citizen of Hyde County passed out of this world on Christmas morning when he had another stroke of paralysis. For a number of years Ed JARVIS has been in ill health. (In Memory Of by Rebecca SWINDELL and R.S. SPENCER, JR. states Edward B. JARVIS was born June 11, 1857 and died December 25, 1930. His parents were Thomas JARVIS and Ann C. SWINDELL. His first wife was Mary Matilda GIBBS and his second wife was Henrietta WATSON.) On Mr. J.M. ALCOX’S 81st birthday, December 6, his children, Mrs. J.M. JENNETTE, Mrs. G.W. JENNETTE, Mr. Alton ALCOX and Mr. A.R. ALCOX, surprised him with a birthday dinner. There were 24 grandchildren present and 7 great-grandchildren. He has a total of 36 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. We are hoping to spend many more pleasant birthdays with him. [Written by his granddaughter: Maggie Belle JENNETTE.] On December 10, 1930, the death angel visited our home and took from our midst a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Theresa S. RABURN. She was born December 18, 1857 and was 72 years, 11 months and 22 days old. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Swan Quarter. The funeral was conducted at the house by Rev. G. WINTERS of Engelhard and Rev. LANCE, pastor of the Methodist church at Swan Quarter. She was laid to rest in the family graveyard. [Written by a grandchild: Metrah HARRIS.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ February, 1931 Vol. 8; #2 Fairfield Commercial Department Graduates Two Pupils: Miss Ruby JONES and Miss Virginia MIDYETTE left February 3 for Chicago where they will take a position with the LaSalle people. These two fine young ladies have worked hard and mastered the Stenotype and typewriting courses, writing over 150 words per minute on the Stenotype. We congratulate them and wish them well in their new positions. New Businesses Open: Mr. C.R. BISHOP and Mr. H.L. ROPER opened a “City Market” in Belhaven, N.C. JOHNSON & McKEEL have opened a new grocery and meat market on Main Street in Belhaven, N.C. Mr. Donald WATSON opened up a new place of business in Engelhard, carrying groceries and running a filling station. W.H. PARISHER opens a new electric soda fountain in Swan Quarter. Births: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Max GUTHRIE, a son on January 16, 1931. They have named him Rex Beach GUTHRIE. Born to Dr. and Mrs. A.L. BELL of Belhaven, a fine boy. They call him Alfred L. BELL, JR. and he was born January 23, 1931. Deaths: On February 9 Mrs. Luhanna CUTRELL had a stroke of paralysis. At 4:15 o’clock Wednesday, February 11, the spirit departed to Him who gave it. She was nearing her 79th birthday. For many years she was a member of the Methodist church. Mrs. CUTRELL was born in Lake Landing Township on April 3, 1852. She was married to David CUTRELL in 1868. To this couple were born eight children. Four are dead and four are living, Mr. J.B. CUTRELL of Belhaven, D.D. CUTRELL, W.R. CUTRELL and Mrs. David MOONEY, all of Fairfield, survive her. She has a half-sister, Mrs. Mahalia CUTRELL who lives at St. Bride’s, Virginia. There are 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Services were held at Mr. David MOONEY’S, where she made her home. Rev. W.R. HARDESTY had the service and was assisted by Rev. E.R. STEWART. Mr. George MIDYETTE of Lake Landing, after a long illness in the State Asylum, passed away on February 4. His body was laid to rest back in Hyde county. For many years he kept store at Lake Landing and also kept the post office. Mr. B.S. CARTWRIGHT of Fairfield underwent a serious operation at Sarah Leigh Hospital at Norfolk, Virginia in the latter part of January. As we go to press he and his wife, who has been with him, are still there. CUTHRELL, Swan Quarter] Mr. George SWINDELL and his wife quietly celebrated their 50th anniversary of their marriage at home, February 2, 1931. Mr. SWINDELL is nearly 74 years old and his wife follows him very closely in age in years but only a few months difference in age. They have one son, Mr. P.E. SWINDELL who is 49 years old and only one granddaughter, Camille SWINDELL, who is 14 years old. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ March, 1931 Vol. 8; #3 Hotels of Hyde County: Mrs. W.J. HARRIS, Swan Quarter, N.C. HOWARD Inn, Swan Quarter, N.C. Mrs. Matilda ADAMS, Lake Landing, N.C. New Holland Hotel, New Holland, N.C. CLAYTON Hotel, Engelhard, N.C. WATSON Hotel, Engelhard, N.C. Fairfield Inn, Fairfield, N.C. These hotels take care of boarders and transient people. Obituaries: On Sunday morning, February 15, 1931, just as the sun was rising, Mrs. Betty JARVIS of Swan Quarter passed over the river to join the angels. She had been sick about four weeks. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and had lived a beautiful Christian life. She was 74 years old and was laid to rest in the family burying ground beside her husband who had been gone eight years. Funeral services were conducted by Elder Jabil HARRIS, her pastor. She leaves two sisters and one brother to mourn her going. Thomas R.L. JONES answered to the call home Monday night, February 16, 1931. He had suffered with tuberculosis for a number of years. Seven years ago he united with the Engelhard Baptist Church. For a number of years he was not able to work and was an object of charity. He and his two daughters were living at the county home at the time of his death. Mr. JONES was born September 12, 1862 and was in his 69th year. He leaves his two daughters: Lillie Mae JONES and Maggie Lee JONES. He has one sister who outlived him, Mrs. Dick MIDYETTE of Lake Landing. The two girls will make their home with her. Mr. JONES was buried at Soule’s cemetery with Rev. E.R. STEWART conducting services. Mrs. Delilah ROSE answered the call out of this life on Saturday, February 28. She was born June 7, 1853. Three children outlive her, Mr. Bernie ROSE of Swan Quarter, Mr. Albin F. ROSE of Richmond, Virginia and Mrs. J.B. DANIELS of Currituck county. Also eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren outlive her. Her husband died around 48 years ago but she struggled to make a living and cared for her children for a number of years. She was and invalid for 5 or 6 years. She was buried at the Joe VOLIVA cemetery where services were conducted by Rev. E.R. STEWART of Fairfield. Capt. F.F. SPENCER of Fairfield Township, Flave, as he was known, was for many years captain of a boat operating from Fairfield to Elizabeth City, Norfolk and other points. For 30 years he operated a boat from Fairfield to Elizabeth City. He was a member of the Methodist Church and was a Shriner and past-master of the Fairfield Masonic Lodge. He was President of the Fairfield Canal and Turnpike Co. He was also a director of the First & Citizens National Bank. He was 72 years and 2 months old. He leaves four brothers: Capt. Eugene SPENCER, his twin brother of Norfolk, Virginia, Claude SPENCER of New Bern, Bascom SPENCER of Lake Landing and Walter SPENCER of Norfolk, Virginia. He leaves a wife and five children: Mrs. Charles N. GOODNO of Raleigh, Lawyer C.B. SPENCER of Statesville, Lawyer Walter SPENCER of Raleigh, Mrs. Dean SLAGLE of Gainesville, Florida, and Flave SPENCER, JR. The latter is a child by his second wife. He also leaves 11 grandchildren. Services were held at home by Rev. W.R. HARDESTY, assisted by Rev. E.R. STEWART and Rev. Roe HARRIS. The Masonic Lodge had charge of the grave services. For a number of years he had not been well, declining in health till the end came. The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Zeb EMORY, Daniel Stevenson EMORY, died January 30, 1931. The April issue will carry and account of Mrs. Clarisy MASON’S death, who died late in February. Births: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin MIDYETTE, a son on February 14, 1931. His name is Russell Adolphus. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Franklin MIDYETTE of Fairfield, a girl on March 7. They call her Lyda Young MIDYETTE. STEWART’S mother commerating Mother’s Day. BLAKE of Fairfield to Marie GIBBS of Engelhard—May 12, 1931 Mrs. Rebecca M. SWINDELL announces the marriage of her daughter, Margaret, to Mr. Frank Carydon GILL of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 30, 1931. Chapter of Sorrow: Mrs. Josephine McLAIN was born May 26, 1877 and died April 14, 1931. There was born to her one child, Mrs. Irwin MAYO; also 7 grandchildren and her husband, Mr. M.L. McLAIN, mourn her going. She leaves one brother, T.E. BRIDGMAN, and one sister, Mrs. Billie SPENCER. Mrs. McLAIN had been suffering from cancer for several years. She was a member of the Rose Bay Baptist Church. She was laid to rest in the Bridgman cemetery. Services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. E.R. STEWART. Mrs. Clara MASON died February 27, 1931 at the age of 86 years, with influenza. In the fall of 1926 she had started to Norfolk to spend the winter and was stricken with the same disease. During the winter she fell on the heater in the sitting room and was severely burned. She was never the same again. Mrs. MASON married Jesse S. MASON during the Civil War. He was a soldier in the Union Army. He died with stomach cancer 41 years ago, when the youngest of their 8 children was only 2 years old. Her oldest son, Sylvanus MASON, died about 7 years ago, leaving a large family. The deaths of Mrs. MASON and her son are the only adult deaths in this family in 41 years. The funeral service was conducted from the home by Rev. D.G. SAUNDERS of Belhaven, N.C. She was buried in the family graveyard. Mrs. Outa EVANS, a daughter, and P.S. MASON, a son, where unable to attend because of the great distance away. She was a member of the Christian church. Mrs. MASON is survived by 4 sons and 3 daughters: A.S. MASON and J.S. MASON of Rosemary, N.C., J.R. MASON of Swan Quarter, P.S. MASON of Eustis, Florida, Mrs. Outa EVANS of Great Falls, Montana, Mrs. Claude VOLIVA and Mrs. Maggie DALE, both of Norfolk, Virginia. Her death is mourned by about 30 grandchildren and about 15 great-grandchildren. All her brothers and sisters have gone on before her. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ June, 1931 Vol. 8; #6 On the night of May 27 a group of friends from Engelhard visited Mrs. Otis COX and gave her a shower of presents in celebration of the 30th birthday. Mrs. COX has been sick with tuberculosis for several months now. She is somewhat improved and lives in hopes of attending the Modern Woodman Sanitorium in Colorado. A Sad Chapter: Mr. Bascom SPENCER of Lake Landing died and was buried at Fairfield cemetery, Monday, June 8th. Rev F.B. BRANDENBURG held the service. In God’s own wise providence He saw fit to call out of this world on Sunday, June 7th, Rena Bell WILLIAMS, who died in the Washington hospital. She was carried there on Tuesday and died of gastritis. She was the nineteen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will WILLIAMS of New Lands. She was a member of the Fairfield Baptist Church. Services were conducted at the home by her pastor and she was laid to rest at the Fairfield cemetery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ July, 1931 Vol. 8; #7 [Nothing of genealogical interest.] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ August, 1931 Vol. 8; #8 Mrs. M.M. HARRIS and son Graham of Elizabeth City, recently visited Dr. and Mrs. A.G. HARRIS. Also John G. HARRIS and his wife of New York have been visiting their parents, Dr. and Mrs. A.G. HARRIS. McKINNEY of Scranton—September 12 A quiet wedding took place in the Rose Bay Baptist Church, Sunday morning, October 11, at 9 a.m. when Mr. Marion Leroy WINDLEY of Belhaven, N.C. was married to Miss Sarah Elizabeth GIBBS of Sladesville. Those witnessing the scene were Mrs. Theo GIBBS, Miss Marybelle GIBBS and Miss Irene HARRIS. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. E.R. STEWART. Miss Ella Zena CARTWRIGHT of Fairfield was married to Mr. Robah F. BAYERS of Roxboro, N.C. on Saturday, October 3, in Halifax, Virginia. Their home will be in Roxboro. Chapter of Sorrow: Mrs. Ottis COX, age 30, died Friday night, September 11, of tuberculosis. She leaves a husband, two children (a boy and a girl), her mother, a sister, and a brother. She was a member of the Engelhard Baptist Church. Mrs. Rebecca SWINDELL, a life-long citizen of Fairfield, had been sick several weeks. On Thursday night, September 17, she had an attack at home and died while the physician was preparing some medicine. She was the mother of a large family. Her husband preceded her in death by a few years. She leaves behind six daughters and four sons. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ November, 1931 Vol. 8; #11 Chapter of Sorrow: Alex HARRIS, son of Mr. W.A. HARRIS, died October 19, at Memorial Hospital at Washington, N.C. He was a young man of only 24 years. He had been operated on for appendicitis. He leaves a father and mother, a wife, two brothers, two sisters, and other relatives. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church on Tiney Oak Road. His body was laid to rest at Soule’s cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. C.M. LANCE. Mrs. Clara M. HARRIS, as she was known, lived near Swan Quarter and owned a store. She was sick only about two weeks. She was carried to the hospital and died with an abscess of the stomach. She was 49 years old and was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. Three children survive her: J. Allen HARRIS, Miss Archie HARRIS and Miss Priscilla HARRIS. She is also survived by three sisters and one brother: Mrs. George ROSS, Mrs. Alvin LUPTON, Mrs. Ed NOBLES, and Mr. Charlie FLOWERS. On September 17, 1931, as evening shadows began to hover over the little village of Fairfield, an angel from heaven came to our home and called the spirit of our precious mother, Rebecca Murray SWINDELL. She found joy in devotion to the Fairfield M.E. Church from early youth through her entire life. On June 21, 1899, she was married to the late Thomas Franklin SWINDELL, our beloved father, and to this union God gave four sons and six daughters, all of whom survive except one son who died in infancy. Her 55 years on earth were like unto a sweet summer rose which scatters its perfume in the air and is taken up to heaven, having left a memory undimmed throughout the ages. [Written by W.
